How long does it take you to choose and purchase a family travel insurance policy? Some people take a lot longer than others, but if you know how to do it right it’s not necessarily the time you have to spend that matters. It’s how you do it that can really make a difference to the outcome…

Be prepared to check as many insurers as you can

There are plenty of them around after all. You’ll probably start with the familiar ones but don’t let this stop you from finding others. Sometimes it’s the companies you’ve never considered that can provide the best quotes for you. But don’t assume "cheap" always means "good" – read the fine print. You have been warned.

Know what you are looking for

This might sound odd but with so many policies out there and so much variety in the wording, you can never assume two family travel insurance policies will be exactly the same. Are you looking for free cover for your kids? What about cover for extreme sports? How much medical cover is offered – and do you get extra if you are looking at a US-based holiday? By focusing on as many different areas as possible before you start looking, you will find the whole process much easier and more straightforward than it would otherwise be. Use the Internet

It’s there so why not make the most of it? You can start by using comparison sites but don’t put off going to the sites of a few individual insurers too. This is the best way to get a good variety of quotes to go on. You can then go through them and choose the most appropriate family travel insurance policy from the ones you find.

Don’t leave it until the last minute

When you’re planning a holiday, it’s easy to delay getting your cover. After all, we all know buying new outfits to take abroad and looking up information about what you're going to do once you're there is a lot more exciting and interesting!

You do need that policy though, and the later you leave it the more likely you are to skip the steps and suggestions we’ve given you above to go with the quickest route. Unfortunately, that could then mean you end up with something a lot more expensive than you should have – and perhaps even unsuitable.

If you want to get properly covered for your break, make sure you take the time to look around for the best family travel insurance deal. Once you’ve sorted out your cover you can tick that off your list of things to do. That leaves you plenty of time to start looking forward to the best bits – shopping for holiday clothes, counting down the days until you leave and actually enjoying your holiday!
