Sightseeing and Skiing Around Munich – How to Get There
Posted: Aug 19, 2014
As the third largest city in Germany and the capital of the German state of Bavaria, there’s much to see and explore once you get to Munich. Transfers are available from the airport, and the city has an efficient and extensive transportation network system. There's no doubt you'll enjoy yourself, whether you’re planning on skiing, sightseeing, exploring or anything else that comes to mind.
Here are some of the most popular places to go from the airport and the best ways to get there.
The City Proper
With an interesting mix of historic buildings and modern architecture, there’s definitely a lot to see and do in the wonderful city of Munich. Transfers are available directly to the city from the airport, with options of shuttle, rental car, taxi, train or bus. The latter two provide the cheapest service, but aren't as convenient as a private shuttle transfer, which will take you right to your accommodation.
From the airport at Munich, transfers can easily be arranged to get to the city. For groups needing a shuttle, arrangements can be made in advance online, or through representatives at the airport. Taxis are aplenty, but the least expensive option is to get a ticket or railway pass from the airport office. The railway is directly linked to the airport and serviced by the S-1 and S-8 railway lines, which connect to many destinations.
Popular Ski Resorts
As part of the Alps and because of its proximity to Austria’s great resorts, skiing is one of the most popular reasons people fly in to Munich. Transfers directly from the airport to many of the most popular resorts nearby are readily available, making it easy to land, get to the resort and be skiing in no time.
Achenkirch. A favourite among beginner skiers and snowboarders, Achenkirch has 25 kilometres of varied slopes that will appeal to different types of skiers and snowboarders. It will take around an hour to get there.
Oberau. Also just an hour away (in good driving conditions), Oberau features 50 kilometres of cross-country skiing trails that are mostly intermediate in difficulty. It also has three black runs, which are a major attraction for skiers - including the mogul run under the Markbachjoch lift featuring a near vertical 700-metre drop. Snowboarding is another popular activity in Oberau, although the terrain is largely easy, with 90 percent of it served by draglifts, mostly T-bars. It also has a fun park with a half pipe at Auffach.
Kitzbuhel. Kitzbuhel is one of the most popular resorts nearby; it has around 170 kilometres of varied slopes, including the popular Streif ski run. A favourite with those who love powder and deep snow, the downhill Hahnenkamm run is among the many must-ski slopes for serious skiers. From the airport, it will take around an hour and forty-five minutes to get to the resort by shuttle. Trains and buses are also available, however it will take at least three hours, with many changes and connections required.
