Kailash Spiritual Discovery and Revelation – Personage of Lord Shiva

For the Kailash Manasarovar Yatri’s (pilgrims) there are many attributes that depict and explain the true embodiment of Lord Shiva. Among his any many names and manifestations are the; Lord of Kailash (KailashNath) or as the ascetic one (Mahayogi), who has a moon crescent Chandraprakash or who holds a trident in his hands (Trishoolin). There are however special attributes that are used in the depiction of the lord of dissolution – Lord Shiva.

Unique and Special Attributes of Lord Shiva

For many Hindu devotees the special attributes and the personage of Lord Shiva is of importance in spiritual quest, growth, discovery and revelation. These special attributes give an insight and revelation into his exalted pantheon of the religions great gods and deity’s.

Trident – affectionately known as the Trishul, a three pronged trident captures and symbolizes three Gunas – Rajas, Sattva and Tamas.

Crescent – seen as one who has a crescent moon (Chandraprakash) for an adornment its spiritual meaning is the span or time of creation from start to end.

Third Eye – depicted with three eyes as the one who has subdued and conquered desire and burned it to ashes.

Matted Hair – the hair spirals in the form of the cowrie shell one of the lord’s distinctive weapons.

Blue Throat – by drinking the poison from the churning war between the Devas and Asuras, Parvati prevented the poison from spreading in Shiva’s body by squeezing his throat turning it blue.

River Ganges – representing the nectar of immortality it’s also believed the divine Ganges flows and originates from mount Kailash – Shiva’s abode.

Drum – referred to as the damaru is an emblem and significant especially in his incarnation as Nataraja (lord of dance).

Ring of Skulls – in most incarnations the Lord Shiva is seen wearing a ring of skulls.

Sitting of Tiger Skin – seating on the tigers skin is believed to be the uppermost honor for the most honorable and revered ascetics.

Smeared in Ashes – a depiction that has the Lord Shiva denying all material needs and possessions.

Cobra Garland – lord Shiva is depicted wearing around his neck a garland of cobras.

Nandi – the mythological transportation means or vehicle of the lord Shiva also depicts him Pashupati – protector of the animals or cattle. It also holds spiritual significance of Dharma.

Mount Kailash – the eternal abode for all souls and the centre of the universe is Lord Shiva’s and Goddess Parvati.
