The Science Behind Touch Screen Technology

Let’s understand the science behind the technique that is applied in touch screen systems:
There are three basic systems that are used to recognize persons touch: Resistive, Capacitive and Surface Acoustic Wave.
- Resistive: It consists of normal glass panel that is covered with a resistive and conducive metallic layer. These layers are held apart by the spacers and a scratch resistant layer is placed on the top of whole set up. When the monitor is operational, a current runs through both the layers. The two layers then make contact at the same point where the user touches the screen. The change is then calculated by the computer. Once the calculation is done, the special drivers translate the touch into something that the operating system can understand.
- Capacitive: In this system, the electric charges are stored in the layer which is placed on the glass panel of the monitor. When the user touches the screen, some of the charges are transferred to the user so that charge on the capacitive layer decreases. This decrease in charge is measured in circuit located at each corner of the monitor. The system then calculates the relative difference in charge at each corner where the touch took place. It then relays the information to the touch screen driver software.
- Surface Acoustic Wave System: In this system, two transducers are places along the x and y axes of the monitor glass plate. Under Surface Acoustic Wave System, reflectors are also placed on the glass that reflects electric signal sent from one transducer to another. The receiving transducer then finds whether the wave was disturbed by a touch at any instant or not.
One plus point of this system is that it has no metallic set up on the screen which allows perfect image clarity. It is for this reason that surface acoustic wave system is considered among three for displaying detailed graphics.
