Doha is the charming capital city of Qatar, beaming with modern appeal though at the same time steeped in history; the city has a rich cultural heritage that has left behind many preserved monuments and landmarks. Doha allows you to witness a blend of the past and the present and step back in time to a bygone period. Brightsun Travel offers cheap holidays to Doha from UK, so you can plan an enticing city break here and look forward to a journey back in time. We have shortlisted the most awe-inspiring historic landmarks in Doha.

Katara Mosque

This is one of the most beautiful Masjids in Qatar, designed by Zainab Fadil Oglu – a famous Turkish mosque designer. It’s located in Doha’s Katara Cultural Village and has plenty of exquisite features, including patterned tilework, mosaics, carved ceilings, a glistening chandelier, a towering minaret, a dome and an intricately decorated mihrab. There are also some historical objects to admire here including ornaments, handicrafts, and inscriptions.

Al Koot Fort

Al Koot Fort, aka the Doha Fort was built back in 1927 and formerly served as a police station to protect Doha’s Souq Waqif and also a jail. This impressive square shaped fort is an alluring example of architecture from the early 20th century, and features four towers – one rectangular shaped and three circular shaped, all of which feature Qatari style battlements. Al Koot Fort is well-preserved and is now a museum with a collection of historic items and artefacts.

Souq Waqif

Doha’s Souq Waqif is an iconic historic landmark dating back over 250 years, with lots of sightseeing and leisure opportunities. Here you can browse traditional market stalls and shops lined along narrow alleys, most of which are located inside restored heritage buildings. It’s also the perfect place to immerse yourself in Qatari cultures, go shopping for items such as perfumes, clothing, spices, handicrafts, and jewellery, witness traditional performances, dine at authentic Qatari cafes, and browse local art galleries.

National Museum of Qatar

The National Museum of Qatar is a brand new attraction of Doha that opened in 2019, with a striking architectural design inspired by the desert rose which is found in the arid desert landscapes of Qatar. The museum is located in the former home and palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al-Thani – the former Emir of Qatar, and is home to galleries with impressive artefacts and exhibits, as well as a 220 seat auditorium and two new restaurants.

Barzan Towers

Situated in the charming village of Umm Salal Mohammed, the Barzan Towers date back to the late 1800s when they were built, and have recently been restored. These fort-like watch towers were believed to have been built beside the sea to look out for approaching ships and potential invaders, to monitor local pearl divers and also to conduct astronomical observations, particularly for the lunar calendar.
