How quartz is processed for use in everyday products
Quartz is a common mineral found in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock throughout the world. Its crystalline structure allows it to be known for its beauty in the form of white sand beaches and semi-precious stones, but its resistance is what makes it useful in different ways.
The name "quartz" itself comes from the Slavic words meaning "hard". On the Mohs scale, an index that measures the hardness of geological materials where 1 is the softest rating and 10 is the strongest, quartz is rated 7 in terms of strength. This means that it can scratch glass and steel. It has a high resistance to crushing and a high melting temperature, and is resistant to chemicals, heat and erosion. This allows quartz to be ideal for applications such as hydraulic fracturing, casting molds, and sandblasting.
How Quartz Is ProcessedQuartz forms when silicon and oxygen combine in the earth. It is found en masse in late-function igneous deposits, such as pegmatites, and is generally present with other materials, such as spodumene (lithium mineral), feldspars, garnet, and micas. Quartz is one of the main components of continental rocks and can be found in large quantities as silicon sands after millions of years of cycles of mountain creation and erosion. Generally, it is extracted from the ground through open pit mining methods with backhoes and motor graders.
After removing it from the ground, typically, quartz undergoes different size reductions through crusher jaw, cone crushers, crushers impact and hammer mills. Generally, further size reduction is done with rod and ball mills to free the quartz from the other minerals.
The quartz concentration is then done by gravity-based processing or flotation foam, such as Hydrosizers ™ or spirals. Silica sands are generally cleaned with equipment such as attrition cells to remove surface impurities such as iron stains.
Quartz (and silica sands) are key components in many products. Most often, quartz is traded based on particle size. These uses may include concrete sand, golf courses, baseball fields, volleyball fields, oil and gas production ( fracture sands), foundry sands, sandpaper, glass, fiberglass, and water purification systems..
To create the finer sizes (known as powdered silica) required for fillers for putty, paint, and rubber, quartz can also be ground with jet mills and attrition mills.
Other uses of quartzOther applications of quartz are notorious in our daily lives. Extremely fine, wafer-like pieces of quartz can be found in many electronic devices. Quartz generates an electrical current when pressure is applied to it (known as piezoelectricity), as the brothers Jacques and Pierre Curie discovered in the 1800s. Because it can vibrate at precise frequencies, quartz is essential for instruments of time., like watches. We can say that quartz stands the test of time.
The piezoelectric properties of quartz are also extremely useful for signal transmission instruments such as radios, televisions, radars and sonars.
