For children, the summer is traditionally meant for play, rest and relaxation from a long school year. There's beautiful weather and it's nice for your children to be outdoors getting more sunlight and fresh air.
The summer is also a great opportunity for children to further their development. While summer school is an option, taking on a summer job is a practical way to learn discipline and new skills as well as get to know new people.
With money in the bank, your child can start learning money management skills and starting saving for college or other important purchases.
When you're a pre-teen or teen, there are limited job options.
What job can you get in the summer if you're a child?
Here's a list of ways for how to make money as a kid at home. There are both online and traditional methods.
What if you want your child to get a job outside as it's the summer time?
Here's a list of outdoor jobs for children during the summer.
1. Helping out on a farmFarming involves a lot of manual labor outdoors like milking cows, feeding the animals, cleaning their stalls, ploughing fields and driving tractors. If you live in the country, your child might be able to find a job on a farm.
Many farms are in remote areas not close to public transportation. If your child can't drive, it might be challenging for you to find the time to drive to and from the farm. You should know some farms offer to drive workers to the farm. You can probably work out a solution with the farm owner.
- Work in the outdoor portion of a retail storeIf there's a local retail store that has outdoor product (i.e. retailers with a gardening portion), your child can apply to manage this area. As it's seasonal product, they're likely looking for seasonal workers.
- Work at a golf courseMy husband used to work at a golf course. His golf course often had students working over the summer. There's so much outdoor work that needs to be done to maintain the landscaping at a golf course.
- Work as a waitress or waiter at a restaurant with a patioWhile your child won't be outdoors all the time, at least they'll get a little bit of outdoor time.
- LifeguardIf your child loves swimming and hanging out at the pool, this job is ideal! Of course, being a lifeguard requires certain skills and certifications, but if your child has those things, this job might be the best fit.
- Be a camp counsellorIf your child likes mentoring and teaching children, being a camp counsellor is a good option. I imagine it's probably quite a fun job because you also get to participate in a lot of outdoor sports and activities like hiking and biking.
- Wash carsYour child can get a job at a car wash. It'll keep them physically active. They'll learn how to clean and care for cars.
