The GATE Exam syllabus is not very different than what is taught at university levels when it comes to the subject matter. GATE checks Aptitude, Reasoning, English and Engineering Mathematics other than subjects of respective technical discipline. Questions asked are either Multiple Choice Question or Numerical Answer Type. There are four options from which one selects the right answer. Negative marketing is done only for the MCQ type and not the NAT type questions. Candidates who have successfully passed GATE examination can also apply for various other posts in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) based on their scores. Many organisations like BHEL, NTPC, BPCL, HPCL, etc., use GATE scores to select candidates.

Conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the ESE Exam is appeared for by more candidates than GATE. The exam is conducted for only four core engineering branches namely Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. The ESE syllabus and pattern, however, is wider in scope than GATE syllabus and therefore requires time and efforts for extra level preparation. Apart from the technical subjects of the respective branches, Paper-1 of ESE contains 10 subjects to check General knowledge that an engineering graduate must possess. The main difference lies in the fact that ESE Examination has somewhat a lengthy princess in the form of a Prelims followed by Mains Exam. Questions at the Mains stage are subjective and each question has subparts. Here writing skills, presentation skills, planning for answers before writing them in a time-bound manner matter the most. If you aspire to be a gazetted officer or a high grade professional in Indian Railways Service, Indian Defense Services, Indian Naval Armament Services and Indian Telecommunication Services, Indian Ordnance Factories Services, and the Central Water Engineering and Central Power Engineering Service, then IES is the right choice for you. It is one of the most coveted exams in the country and attracts lakhs of aspirants every year.

If you have gone through the documents of Gate Exam Date Notification and ESE 2020 Notification, you will find that both ESE and GATE do not demand candidates to have a bachelor’s degree in the same discipline in which they have applied for the examination. Speaking about the level of competition, the ratio can be considered as the number of candidates giving the exam vs the number of vacancies available. For IES, the ratio comes to 300:1 whereas for GATE it is 10:1.
