Sour cream has become a staple in our kitchen for dips, adding moisture and body to the cake. No doubt mayonnaise holds a special place in our hearts, but you cannot ignore the importance of sour cream. You can use this fundamental ingredient in both sweet and savory dishes. Sour cream is available in stores in any of the commercial storage fridge. But what are you supposed to do if you run out of sour cream? Well, you can always make sour cream at home with just a few of the ingredients. Making homemade sour cream is easy and effortless. So whenever you happen to have no sour cream on hand, make it on your own with just these 3-ingredients mentioned below.
Condensed Milk:Of course, you will need a dairy product for making this sour cream. That product is none other than unsweetened condensed milk, known as evaporated milk. Evaporated milk is unsweetened condensed milk with 70 percent water removed. Always make sure that you are using unsweetened condensed milk. 1-can of condensed milk will produce roughly 1 cup of sour cream. It will take 24 to 48 hours to make sour make with condensed milk.
Lemon Juice:The next ingredient to make sour cream at home is lemon juice. Lemon juice will give your condensed milk a tart flavor. Add 2-tablespoons of lemon juice to 1 cup of condensed milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Whisk it well. You will need to adjust the amount of lemon juice depending on your taste. After mixing the lemon juice and evaporated milk, let it sit in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days. After 2-days, your sour cream is ready to use. Store your sour cream in your refrigerator. If your sour creams turn out to be less thick, you can add flour to it to adjust the consistency.
Vinegar:If you do not have lemon juice at home, then there is a suitable alternative to it. You can use vinegar as a substitute to make sour cream. Adding vinegar to your condensed milk will not change the flavor of your sour cream. For one cup of sour cream, add ¾ teaspoon of vinegar. Let it sit for 6 minutes. Use a whisk to mix it properly. Now place it in the refrigerator for 24 to 48 hours and enjoy it.
Tips:Never freeze your sour cream since it will become watery when thawed.
If you are adding your sour cream to a hot liquid, make sure it is at room temperature.
If you see pink or green scum in your sour cream, it indicates spoilage.
You can store your sour cream in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
