Venice is home, without a doubt, to some of the world’s most beautiful waterways; it is a delightful place to explore aboard one of the many luxury river cruises Italy has to offer. However, once you've absorbed the magnificence with which Venice embraces you, the thrills of the Po River delta await you as you travel further inland.

Italy’s Naturalistic Side

Many Italian cruises are wonderful explorations of the country’s rich, historical sights, which can be viewed from a unique standpoint via the water. However, the other side of Italy, the naturalistic side, should not be missed. The River Po delta is frequently trafficked by pleasure boats and those who still depend on the waterways to make a living. Fishermen are found in abundance harvesting fish and seafood that is destined for the finest recipes and restaurants.

Unique Habitats

The greatest highlight of the River Po delta is its amazingly varied ecosystems and wildlife that inhabits the area, all of which is best seen while on board slow moving river cruises. Italy has a wide array of birdlife in this area, even more so than other locations. The condensed nature of the wildlife population almost guarantees excellent bird watching opportunities, with some rare sightings possible too.

Nature Reserve

The natural area east of Ferrara and north of Ravenna that makes up the River Po delta is a protected nature reserve and a designated World Heritage Site. The birdlife of the wetlands and lagoons is what predominantly draws visitors and touring river cruises. Italy is home to many thousands of different species of birds and many rare ones have been identified in this region. Bird watching enthusiasts and ornithologists from all over the globe visit the River Po delta for its excellent sighting opportunities and for the bird-watching fair in April.

What to See

Some of the most commonly sighted species of birds on the River Po are purple herons, moorhens, cormorants, mallards and coots. The unique vegetation of the wetlands comprises large trees, including pine, oak, beech, cane and the tamarisk, making the landscape both lush and ideal for wildlife. Vast areas of the delta open up to huge coastal dunes, which serve a purpose as natural protection against erosion from the sea. This protective barrier has also proved to be a welcome refuge for many almost extinct flora and fauna.

The history and culture of this ancient country can be uniquely viewed via its waterways on river cruises. Italy, and the full experience of a visit there, is only enhanced by travelling further inland to appreciate its amazing wildlife and natural wonders.
