Posted: Sep 17, 2014
It is difficult to reduce Sicily to just a few select destinations. With its vast history, rich culture, and wonderful array of ancient and modern villas, Sicily is overflowing with amazing places of interests. But apart from the centuries-old buildings and breathtaking architecture, one of the most beautiful things about the island is its spectacular landscape - it has, arguably, some of the most scenic sights in Italy. The following regions are a must on the itinerary of any visitors staying in one of the wonderful villas. Sicily will never disappoint.
Val Demone
This region is home to Mount Etna, an active volcano and a popular destination for hikers and sightseers. Apart from the volcano itself, another favourite attraction in the region is the Alcantara Gorge, a beautiful and majestic canyon that was formed due to Mount Etna's lava flows over the centuries. Also in this region are the Nebrodi Mountains, a vast mountain range with exquisite forests full of diverse flora and fauna.
Val di Noto
From cathedrals, castles, temples and centuries old villas, Sicily is teeming with ancient buildings that have been preserved impressively. So it's no surprise that eight towns in the Val di Noto region have been included as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, making it an important cultural destination as well. One of the towns inscribed on the World Heritage List is Ragusa, home to the Hyblaean Mountains. The region share lush rolling hills with impressive archaeological sites, which makes it even more picturesque. The beauty of Nature's standing side-by-side with the relics of an ancient civilization might almost seem anomalous, but in fact is exactly what makes Val di Noto so very special.
Val di Mazara
There’s a reason why instead of hotels, on the island it's far more popular to stay in villas: Sicily is all about the vibe, and villas provide a certain rustic and authentic experience that no modern hotel can. This holds true with every regions, including Val di Mazara, which is known for its natural diversity. The breathtaking Sicanian Range offers tourists a wonderful view of rolling fields of flowers, while three of the most visited ancient Greek temples are also in this region. There is something quite magical about the presence of ancient buildings surrounded by beautiful flowers in bloom. The three Greek temples, backdropped by their respective landscapes - one surrounded by valleys, another located in an almond orchard, the third overlooking stunning beaches -are be more than enough to convince anyone to spend some quality time in this delightful region.
