3 Things to Remember to Keep Your Holiday Plans on Track

Unfortunately, "holidays from hell" can happen. Things can go wrong, and in rare situations, they can go wrong very badly. But you do have a hand in minimising the possibility of things going wrong – purchasing cheap travel insurance is the major one, but there are others. To keep things under control, here are three things you must remember.

Don’t Lose Your Head

When things don't turn out the way you expect on holiday, it’s easy to begin to worry and lose perspective. The fact is, you must anticipate the possibility of emergencies occurring whilst you are travelling so can be emotionally and mentally ready if it actually does happen. While a decent cheap travel insurance policy will cover you financially, there are situational problems that require a cool head to take care of. For example, if something goes wrong at the hotel, it’s usually best to talk directly to a manager. Point out the issue clearly, and give them a chance to rectify it. Most often, the management will do their best to correct the situation and perhaps compensate you for your trouble. There's no need to go off on a tangent and lose your temper – that doesn't help anyone. Keep calm and carry on!

Keep the Evidence

Despite the best of intentions, you can never be too careful when it comes to claiming on an insurance policy. Make sure you read the fine print of your cheap travel insurance policy, and if and when things do go wrong, make sure you keep a record of all the evidence - including receipts, billing records, invoices, or photos and video recordings of damaged items or belongings. Fortunately, keeping the evidence has become easy in this day and age of camera-equipped smartphones. Often, even the cheaper phones come with high-resolution cameras with a technology called "back-side illumination," which enables you to take clear, well-lit pictures even in low light conditions.

Don’t Delay Taking Action

When you need to make a claim on a policy, don't wait weeks or months before filing it – delays like that can work against you. Keep things as simple as possible – as long as you are honest and clear-cut about the details of your claim, the provider will not usually have a problem paying out on your cheap travel insurance. As mentioned previously, do not lose perspective and focus only on the issues that matter - specifically why you feel that the contract or booking conditions may have been breached or not honoured (for example) and why you feel you should be compensated. Submitting a complaint or claim as soon as you return home ensures that the issue is fresh and still relevant and will therefore have the best chance to be resolved quickly.
