Way to Check and Change the Transmission Fluid
Posted: Jan 27, 2021
The transmission system of your car performs the lubrication process as the same way the engine does. The main difference between them is the transmission generally uses the certain kinds of fluids that are made for lubricating while the other hand the engine only needs the oil for performing its lubrication process.
Like the engine of your car, the components of the transmission also stay lubricated to run it properly. If any part of the transmission is leaking fluids, then the gears and other metal components of the transmission would heat up and cause issues in the entire transmission system. So, you always need to check the transmission fluid of your car for identifying the current condition of the fluid in the transmission.
Check the condition of the transmission fluid
Generally, the transmission fluid should be checked in 40,000 miles in an automatic transmission system. If you have any confusion, then you can easily check out the conditions of the transmission fluid by going through the owner's manual after running your car a few miles. And the most effective way to check it by going through the recommends of your manufacturers.
Level of the fluid
When you want to check the condition of your transmission fluid, first you need to check the level of the fluid. Whenever you check the level of your engine oil, you can generally use a dipstick. As in the automatic transmission cars, the fluid level of your car should rest in the middle of the full and add marks which indicate that the fluid is located at a normal level. On the other hand, if the fluid level is too high or too low, then either you can drain out the extra fluid or refill the new fluid to balance the low fluid at the appropriate level.
The appearance of the fluid
The next important thing is to notice the appearance of the fluid. If you found that the color of your fluid is bubbly or foamy, then it can indicate that either your car have a wrong fluid type or contains too much fluid. In another hand, if the color of the fluid is brown in color, then the coolant definitely mixed with the fluid and contaminated it. In general, it occurs when the radiator has a leak in its oil cooler.
Duration to change the fluid
As we know like the engine oil of your car, the transmission fluid does not change very frequently. But the transmission fluid can run for ten thousand miles before the replacement schedule. The duration for changing the transmission fluid of your car will depend on several factors such as the make and model as well as the quality of the transmission fluid used in your car. So, it concludes that every car has their own set of requirements for changing the transmission fluid. Check your owner's manual for identifying the proper miles for changing the fluids in your car.
Points to change the transmission fluid
As per the car manufacturers, you need to change the transmission fluid of your car at least every 150,000 miles, but it is always preferred to change them after 100,000 miles. Keep in mind that never change the transmission fluid as per the recommendation from your local auto mechanic because they will always try to convince you to change the transmission fluid on every 40,000 to 60,000 miles instead of 100,000 miles.
So, plan your own estimated time for changing the transmission fluid of your car by going through your normal driving habits. If you are driving your car with a frequent stop and go traffic, then the transmission system will generate more heat and deteriorate the transmission fluid faster. But driving the car on the interstate at a consistent speed will last your transmission fluids for more miles.
Conclusion
Whenever you have decided for checking the transmission fluid, make sure that the engine of your car is turned on. In this way, you can check the transmission fluid of your car easily and smoothly. You can also change the oil of your car in proper time and duration by going through the owner's manual and the stipulated condition of your transmission fluid.
