Hydropower is a source of renewable energy produced by high water pressure and it is responsible for producing 17 percent of the world’s total electricity.

It is one of the first and simplest methods of production of electricity and hydropower is also used to operate many mechanical devices as well. Hydropower plants are generally made based on energy conversion and the dams are responsible for storing the water containing potential energy.

It uses the turbine to operate as it converts kinetic energy of the water to mechanical energy and with the help of a generator with the principle of electromagnetic induction, it converts into electrical energy.

The first use of this method dates back to the 4th century BC in regions like Egypt and Iran, where they used watermills which is the earliest form of hydropower. The Roman Empire used water-powered mills for processing grains and China used water wheels to piston-bellows is forged cast iron.

During the Islamic golden age, engineers made various water-powered devices including fulling mills, hullers, and paper mills. Industrial watermills were famous in North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia in the 11th century, and in the late 19th century they became the source of electricity.

There are many advantages advantages of using hydropower. It is a renewable source of energy and problems like scarcity of electricity is not going to be a problem as hydroelectricity will be available all the time. It will also help to conserve the limited sources of energy like petroleum.

It is a clean source of energy as hydropower plants produce energy without emitting any greenhouse gases or toxic byproducts that can pollute the environment.

Unlike the non-renewable sources of energy, hydroelectricity has nothing to do with market fluctuations which result in guaranteed price stability. Dams can store a tremendous amount of water which can be used for various activities when there’s a shortage. You get higher flexibility as the output of electricity can be easily controlled by controlling the flow of water. It costs more to supply the energy to distant areas, but if there are hydropower plants in various places in the country, it can cover more places.

According to the National Hydropower Association, about 300,000 workers are employed in Hydropower plants in the US alone. Hydropower plants are considered to be a one-time investment. They have an average life span of 50-100 years meaning one plant can support many future generations.

Some disadvantages of hydropower plants include environmental impacts. Challenges like topography and building underwater make building a power plant expensive. The amount of water available is directly related to the amount of energy produced. If something like draught occurs, rivers dry up which leads to less hydroelectricity generation.

This has been a serious matter in some countries of Africa. Although there are some disadvantages of hydropower plants the advantages outweigh them. It is a renewable and reliable source of energy and the long-term benefits of this source are notable and this is the reason for cheap available electricity.
