Top 3 Reasons You Must Visit Prague at Least Once in Your Life

The most wonderful thing about Prague is that most of its important sites are very easily accessible. Once you've arrived on the Prague airport shuttle, the city just begs to be explored – and what you'll find can’t help but delight. Although it may not be the very first city that comes to mind when thinking of Europe, it’s definitely should be – for these, and so many more, reasons.

The City of a Thousand Spires

Visible even as you pass by on the Prague airport shuttle, the city is brim-full of centuries-old cathedrals and castles - each with a long and chequered history. While modern cities like New York and Dubai have skyscrapers of metal and glass that touch the sky, this ancient skyline boasts a more substantial, elegant and somewhat regal character. For example, Prague Castle, along with its St. Vitus’s Cathedral, tops the list on an architecture-oriented itinerary, followed closely by the Vysehrad. The city is also home to several palaces that now house magnificent art galleries. And while most of the city seems to celebrate heights in its grand monuments, certain sections represent the exact opposite - such as the diminutive houses along the so-called Golden Lane, which originally housed the royal household’s elite marksmen.

A Blend of Quaint and Modern

Despite the city’s generally classical, even medieval, character, its central hubs and activity centres do not lag behind those of other cities in Europe. If you alight from the Prague airport shuttle around Wenceslas Square, you'll encounter the core of the city’s nerve centre. Around the square, which is actually more a broad avenue than a traditional plaza, are located most of the city’s shops, bars, restaurants, and nightlife venues. And if you tire of the hustle and bustle, escape is easy, with a host of gardens and parks just a stroll away.

The Quirky

The city is not without its slightly hidden, quirky side, either – it's not always so formal and classical, with tradition set in stone. Sometimes, when you know where to look, it can surprise you in delightful ways. Ask your Prague airport shuttle driver for some locals' tips and he may advise you to visit the Lovelock Bridge - a little bridge on Velkoprevorske Namesti where tradition demands you carve your name and that of your loved one into a lock, then secure it onto the bridge before throwing the key into the water. While the lock symbolises a declaration of undying love, nobody knows when the tradition actually began, but based on the number of locks currently on the bridge, it was probably a long time ago! Not far from the Lovelock Bridge is another bridge, this one laden with graffiti, called the John Lennon Bridge - just ask around for some directions. It's well worth seeing even if you aren't a Beatles' fan.
