Pay TDS Online With E-Payment Tax

The manual process of tax collection was replaced by Online Tax Accounting System (OLTAS) in 2004. OLTAS also known as E-Payment Tax was introduced with purpose to minimize human intervention, thus reducing errors and ease online transmission of information of tax collected, deposited, refunded etc. It issues a single copy of a Challan and enables taxpayers to track the status of their challans or e-challan deposited in banks online.

There are three types of Challans that are issued for E-Payment Tax:

  • Challan ITNS 280 – issued for depositing income tax (includes self-assessment tax, advance tax, tax on regular assessment)
  • Challan ITNS 281 – issued for depositing Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) and Tax Collected at Source (TCS)
  • Challan ITNS 282 – issued for depositing gift tax, wealth tax, Securities Transaction Tax (STT) and other direct taxes.
TDS Online Payment Process

The payment of TDS may seem a complicated task. However, with the introduction of electronic or E-TDS payment, the process of TDS has become more convenient. One can make the payment for TDS at the official website of NSDL or National Security Depository Limited. The process of E-payment tax is as follows:

Step 1: Get to the e-payment page

  • Go to the official website of NSDL https://www.tin-nsdl.com/.
  • On the menu, tap on ‘Services’ and a drop-down menu appears.
  • Choose ‘e-payment: Pay Taxes Online’ from the drop-down menu and it will redirect you to the e-payment page.
  • You can directly land on the page of TDS e payment by copying this URL in another tab https://onlineservices.tin.egov-nsdl.com/etaxnew/tdsnontds.jsp.

Step 2: Access the TDS/TCS Challan No/ITNS 281

  • On the page of e TDS payment, tap on the ‘Proceed’ button located in the box named ‘TDS/TCS’.
  • The page will generate the ‘CHALLAN NO/ITNS 281’.

Step 3: Fill in the Challan No/ITNS 281

  • Choose the ‘Tax Applicable’ from given options.
  • Choose the ‘Tax Payment’ from given options.
  • Choose the ‘Nature of Payment’ from the given menu.
  • Choose Payment mode from these options.
  • Net Banking (Choose the Bank Name)
  • Debit Card (Choose the Bank name)
  • Enter these two tax deduction details.
  • Tax Deduction Account No.
  • Assessment Year (Choose from the options)
  • Provide address details (City/District, State and Pin Code are mandatory).
  • Enter your contact details.
  • Mail ID
  • Mobile No.
  • Enter the Captcha and tap on ‘Proceed’.

Step 4: Verification and Payment

  • Once you have completed the Challan, your Tax Deduction Account No. or TAN will be verified.
  • When the verification is done, and you have confirmed the displayed data, you will be redirected to the online banking website of your respective bank.
  • Log in with your credential and make the TDS deposit online.

Do not forget to save a copy of the counterfoil of the Challan as it will contain the Corporate Identity Number or CIN and other TDS payment details.

After going along with the detailed process of TDS payment, let’s take a look at the type of payments that come under TDS. Apart from salaried individuals, TDS applies on the following incomes.

  • Income earned from interest accumulated on securities, funds, dividends and EPF
  • Income in the form of commission
  • Income earned as contractor, subcontractor and freelancer
  • Income derived from providing technical or professional services
  • Income derived from games and lotteries
  • Income derived from royalty.
How to Check TDS Payment Status?

Follow these steps to check your E-Payment Tax status in a hassle-free manner.

  • Visit the official website of Central Processing Cell or CPC of TDS https://www.tdscpc.gov.in/app/tapn/tdstcscredit.xhtml.
  • Type in the captcha as shown in the image and tap on ‘Proceed’ to land on the Tax Payer View of TDS / TCS Credit page.
  • On the page, provide the following details.
  • PAN of Deductee
  • TAN Deductor
  • Financial Year
  • Quarter
  • Type of Return
  • Tap on ‘Go’ and the
TDS online payment details will be auto-generated.
