Are you looking for a fun holiday vacation? If so, can I recommend it? If you live anywhere, a short drive from Illinois, a trip to Lincoln will be not only educational but also fun.

As per the Illinois Travel Guide, Springfield is located in downtown Lincoln. Springfield is where Abraham Lincoln bought the house (the only house he ever owned) and continued his legal practice (you can visit his law firm). It is also the city where he and Mary Todd Lincoln started their family and spent many happy and contented years.

Many of Lincoln’s famous heritage sites have been preserved and are open to visitors. Just take a walk around some of Lincoln's most iconic sites in and around Springfield.

Lincoln home.

Located on 8th Street and Jackson Street, Lincoln House is preserved as part of eight historic neighborhoods. You can actually visit the house where Abraham Lincoln lived from 1844 to 1861. He lived here when he learned that he had won the Republican nomination for the presidential race of the United States. It is also the home he left for a visit to Washington and history as the nation's 16th president.

Many Lincoln home furniture are either antique from this period or are lovingly designed to look like Lincoln furniture.

Train depot and Lincoln farewell address

When Lincoln left Springfield for his inaugural visit to the White House, he first gave his famous farewell address, in which he confessed to many of his friends and neighbors in Springfield. This emotional speech became one of Lincoln's most famous speeches and was given at the train station before boarding his train. The warehouse has been refurbished and includes a public exhibition area.

New Salem, Illinois

New Salem is a small village where Lincoln lived in the 1830s. The village has been historically restored and you can walk around the town and visit the famous Lincoln houses and businesses that lived as a young man in his twenties.

The village is a few miles from Springfield. Choose a guided tour or spend the day wandering around the house, telling stories about Lincoln's countryside and listening to the villagers.
