As we all know, nothing can be done towards prolonging the life of an inanimate object. The same applies to exterior paint colors as well. People spend a good amount on getting their exterior home painting done only to find that it gets damaged in the long run. Small errors can end your walls up into a mess. Understanding the causes of paint failures in exterior walls can give us an aspect on how to go about the subsistence of your exterior walls. Let’s investigate the causes in depth.

Poor surface preparation

Cracking and wax bleeding are the major effects of poor surface preparation. Cracking occurs when the paint is applied before properly removing the previous layer of paint on the wall. If the paint was spread on a rough surface and painting is done without priming the wall, then cracking occurs. When you use staining wood like cedar and redwood and forget or skip to apply primer over it, stains can bleed through the paint. It ends up damaging the appearance of the wall.

Weather

Exterior walls are constantly exposed to the effects of external weather. This results in chalking and fading. Due to constant exposure to harsh weather conditions, paint tends to weather away and leads to loss of grip in the binders. Fading is another effect of excessive exposure to sunlight. Over time, paint becomes brittle, making it less adaptable to temperature and humidity fluctuations.

Moisture

Moisture is perhaps the biggest enemy of good quality paints. Some of the common effects of moisture on exterior walls include blistering, peeling, and mottling that flourish in humid, moist, and warm weather, which mostly causes discoloration. Blistering is a type of paint failure that occurs due to the application of an oil-based paint coat over a wet or damp surface. Blistering also occurs if there is heavy rain before the paint dries.

Improper paint application

Scaling and flaking are two direct results of improper paint application. You might get the best exterior paint colors, but if they aren’t applied well, then there is no way that you can avoid the problem of a paint failure. The process can be hastened through such missteps as applying a rigid coating such as oil enamel over a softer, more flexible coat tends to seep into the cracks causing flaking.
