IPv6 is slowly being adopted in India by many ISP’s. Initially, it was Reliance JIO that initiated IPv6 for its customers in India, but not all ISP’s had adopted IPv6.

To bring awareness about adopting IPv6 locally in India, the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MEITY) and the Ministry of Telecommunications have jointly appointed an IPv6 Expert Panel known as "IP Guru". The IP Guru panel will be run by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI).

IPv6 to see massive growth by end of 2029What is NIXI?

NIXI is the National Internet Exchange of India. It is a non-profit organization and India’s first neutral exchange that was set up to conduct peering of ISP’s in India by routing domestic traffic within India, instead of routing it through an International destination like the US or UK. This will result in low latency and reduced costs (negate international bandwidth prices) for ISP’s and benefit the end customer. So, local ISP’s and CDN’s (Content Driven Network) can exchange traffic and meet or termed as ‘peering’ for a fee (IPv6 is pushed in India by Nixi).

Any ISP can join NIXI that does not have the infrastructure and budget to fully adopt IPv6. NIXI has also launched the IPv6 index portal named NIXI-IP-INDEX portal. The purpose of the IPv6 index portal is to measure IPv6 adoption in India compared to other countries. You can read the Routing and Traffic Policy by NIXI to understand the guidelines of becoming a member at NIXI.

However, peering through NIXI is a short-term solution for ISP’s, as a long-term solution, it is always good to transition to IPv6 by buying IPv6 blocks through a reputed IP Broker like Alpha InfoLab.

But you already have IPv4, then why buy IPv6?

IPv6 is the next-generation Internet Protocol and everyone needs to adopt IPv6 completely. In the coming years, all websites will have to run on IPv6, meaning IPv4 could co-exist but slowly may lose its importance.

That is why if you already have IPv4, there are a few steps you may want to take to stay on the right side of IPv6:

Sell IPv4s of ARIN, RIPE, APNIC through an IPv4 Broker Service Provider on an IPv4 auction site, Ipv4.deals.

You can then buy IPv6 IPs from the RIR (Regional Internet Registry) with the help of an IP broker.

IPv6 adoption by buying IP blocks is a one-time expenditure, whereas, going through NIXI to peering with other ISP’s is a monthly or quarterly, or yearly expenditure (IPv6 is pushed in India by Nixi).

RIPE NCC discloses SSO service was attacked cybercriminals but failedWhy use a Broker to sell IPv4 and buy IPv6?

An IP Broker and service provider works under the guidelines of the RIR’s and facilitates all IP transactions for the buyer and seller. When a broker understands the seller’s and buyer’s needs, it will make sure that the right deal is made and at the right market price that benefits both parties. The broker has all the knowledge and know-how of the documents needs and the procedures to be followed (IPv6 is pushed in India by Nixi).

Therefore, it is very important that if you are an ISP or run multiple websites for your business, then you may want to make the IPv6 adoption soon, so as to capture your audience and stay ahead of your competitors.
