Sony Estimates the PS5 Scarcity could Stretch into Next Year

  • Sony has reportedly alerted that it could scramble to meet PS5 demand next year too.
  • The news comes after Nintendo warned of possible Switch scarcities later this year.

Getting a PlayStation 5 is a rather arduous task right now because of the continuing industry chip shortage. But there’s sad news for the folks hoping the console becomes easier to find.

Sony held a private briefing with a few analysts post reporting its latest financial results, Bloomberg reported, and it allegedly told attendees that PS5 scarcities could continue into next year.

  • I don’t think requisite is calming down this year and even if we save a lot more devices and manufacture many more units of the PS 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be enough to meet up with demand,” chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki said, as per several attendees who asked not to be named by the outlet.

The news concerns that those willing to buy a PS5 some days or weeks before Christmas or a birthday might have to purchase the console months in advance if they can find it. There’s also no guarantee that those tracking down the console next year for any reason (such as waiting for more games to launch in the market) will actually be able to get their hands on one readily.

Sony is not the only gaming company with console demand, as Nintendo currently warned that the chip shortage might affect the supply of Switch units for the entire 2021.

Sony is forecasting that they could be able to restock the stores by the end of 2022. Play Station 5 is selling well, but it seems like odds between demand and supply will stretch into next year, without any official timeline for when Sony estimates the scarcity to end.

This hovers on the face of the latest comments made by Jim Ryan, president, and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. A few months before, Ryan appalled that Play Station 5 stock would restock in the second half of 2021, possibly ending the disappointing scarcity by the holiday season.

Scalpers and bots indeed haven’t helped, but Sony says the prime culprit is carking global chip shortage, which has influenced gadget manufacturers both big and small.

The PS5 has been challenging to find in stock since its launch in November due to the chip shortage. Though, Sony has already sold 7.8 million PS5 consoles.
