All of us want to give our kids the love and affection they deserve. But sometimes, money is tight, or we have to allocate our money to other things. It requires a little creativity, but it is possible to give kids the same special feeling they get from receiving a new object.
In fact, in many cases, by taking out the money we’re able to create amazing experiences and memories they wouldn’t get with more "stuff."
Here are 5 "free" gift ideas for when money is tight:
1. Do Something For Them
Wouldn’t your child love it if you did their chore for them? I know mine would! Or, make their favorite dinner or dessert. Or let them pick their favorite show for the family to watch.
A simple gesture of choice, freedom or affection goes a long ways to show your kids you care.
2. Do Something With Them
Maybe your child has been bugging you to work on that school project or just play together. Spending time with them is the best gift of all! Consider one of these fun activities:
- Start a tickle fight
- Do a puzzle together
- Play a game
- Go on a nature exploration
- Go on a bike ride together
- Swap campfire stories
3. Give Gift Coupons
We love these free kids coupons for birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, and basically any other holiday. My kids also get them as rewards for working hard during after school activities or for getting good grades. They are both highly motivating and make for excellent free gifts.
*My kids especially love the "no chores for a day" and "movie day" coupons!
4. Give the Gift of Technology Time
Like adults, kids love their electronics. So, let’s use it! What is it that your child really enjoys?
Maybe they get 30 minutes to take photos on your phone. Or perhaps they would enjoy extra time with a computer game, or even to listen to music on their own. This is totally free and totally awesome!
5. Playdate With a Friend
Finally, give the gift of a fun sleepover! Either let your child spend the night hanging out with a friend, or do a cousin or sibling. Let them sleep in a different place and stay up late watching movies and eating popcorn. Your child will think it’s the most amazing gift you’ve ever given, and you don’t have to spend a dime.
To Consider With Free Gifts
There you have it! 5 totally awesome ways to give gifts that are "free." Have a playdate, let them have more extra technology time, spend time doing something with or for them, and consider using totally fun coupons.
In the end, time is what really matters, not money. Our kids just want to know that they matter, and when you spend your time specifically for them, they can feel it. And your bonds will only grow.
