Amritsar is the largest urban area in Punjab. Some people know it as the most deeply spiritual city. A trip to this place is like striking travel gold. When you decide to visit this place, you will have plentiful reasons to fall in love with this Amritsar. From connecting to a divine feeling to enjoying lip-smacking food to experiencing the adventure to the Pakistan, you have a lot to do. Get ready to experience the magic of the city by exploring these very famous places.
Wagah Border Ceremony:
Be a part of border-closing ceremony that takes place at sunset every afternoon. The Beating Retreat Ceremony is an ostentatious display of guards from the Indian Border Security Force and the Pakistani Rangers. They salute each other, fold the flags, and close the gates of the borders.
The vibe of sitting in the stadium is much more subdued. The blasts from speakers and performance of guards will give you memories of hours of storytelling back at home.
The Golden Temple:
The temple is a definitive top attraction. The two-story structure covered in real gold has a 5.1 meter deep manmade lake. The legendry religious shrine is among the most sacred places of worship for Sikhs. Every Sikh visits the Golden Temple at least once in their lifetime.
During the visit, you walk clockwise on the path that flanks the pool. You can witness many worshippers chanting and bathing in the water. It has world’s largest community kitchen with hordes of volunteers peeling garlic, cooking huge vats of roti and daal, and chopping onions for thousands of people’s dinner every day. It is an inspiring place you can get involved with, if you want.
Jallianwala Bagh:
The public garden reminds of approx 1,500 people who were killed by British soldiers. These people were demanding the release of imprisoned leaders of Indian Independence Movement in 1919. You can still see bullet holes in the walls. Its Martyrs’ Gallery brings a picture of important figures of Indian independence. You can also see an eternal flame and humbling exhibition on the victims.
The Mandir Mata Lal Devi:
Dedicated to Saint Lal Devi, the temple is said to boost fertility in women. For non-devotees, it resembles a funhouse only. You will get in dark and thin passages that go to garish rooms covered in mirrored mosaics. Then you would walk through open mouths of animal carvings, and crawl through a watery cave to the Shrine.
Besides these, Shri Durgiana Mandir, Gobindgarh Fort, Khalsa College, Ram Bagh Gardens, and Baba Atal Tower are few other mesmerizing places that you should not miss.
If you are someone coming from the national capital, you can simply take a Delhi to Amritsar sleeper bus at night, reach Amritsar in the morning, check-in the room, and get fresh to start your visit to the above-mentioned famous places. The distance of each city to Amritsar is different and may require different duration.
