Chromebooks are excellent gadgets for remaining connected while still doing tasks. However, a broken Chromebook touchpad can spoil your day. It may even lead you to believe you have a frozen Chromebook. You have a few options for resolving the problem.
The Causes of a Non-Working Touchpad on a Chromebook

When a Chrome Touchpad Doesn't Work, Here's How to Fix It.
There's a simple fix for a broken touchpad that also serves as a diagnostic step. To navigate, use your Chromebook's touchscreen (if available) or connect an external mouse. If one or both of these options work, the issue is isolated to the touchpad and not a larger Chromebook issue.
How to Repair a Broken Touchpad on a Chromebook
- You can begin troubleshooting the problem once you've determined it's a touchpad issue rather than something more serious with your Chromebook. Here are some possible solutions to consider:
- Make sure the touchpad is free of dust and grime. It's possible that a thorough cleaning is required. Wipe away any dust or grime on the touchpad with a soft cloth. Also, blow out anything stuck in the crevices or under the touchpad with a can of compressed air.
- For ten seconds, tap your fingers on the touchpad. The vibration caused by drumming your fingers on the touchpad helps dislodge flecks of dirt and jostle debris out of the way.
- Several times, press the Esc key. The Esc key prevents the current page from loading. If something on the website is causing your computer to misbehave or freeze, typing Esc a few times will stop it and restore normalcy.
- Turn off the Chromebook, then turn it back on. Everyone in tech support tells you to restart your computer for a reason. It frequently works. Hold the power button down until the Chromebook turns off, then wait a minute before turning it back on.
- Make a hard reset. A hard reset of your Chromebook has no effect on your files, but it can cure a number of issues. Hold down the Power button until the Chromebook shuts off, then simultaneously press the Power and Refresh buttons to reboot and reset the machine.
- Consult the Chromebook's instruction manual. The touchpad on some Chromebooks can be turned off using the function keys. You might have accidentally turned off the touchpad, and all you have to do now is turn it back on.
- Modify the way the touchpad works. Turn off functions like tap-to-click, touchpad acceleration, and touchpad speed in Settings> TouchPad. Changing such a habit could bring the touchpad back to life.
- Delete the offending account. If you have multiple accounts on your Chromebook, try deleting the one that's causing the issue or switching to a new account to see if it solves the problem.
- The majority of Chromebooks are cloud-based and work totally online. Before you delete the account, make a backup of any files you've saved locally.
- Consult an expert in the field. Check the physical components with an expert. Your Chromebook may be damaged or unrepairable if none of these alternatives work.
If that's the case, it might be time to get rid of your old Chromebook and get a new one. At the very least, there are several excellent models available, and they are not prohibitively expensive in comparison to other laptops.
