Many people are fooled into thinking that Sicily, the island often referred to as the ‘heaven of Italy’ can be explored in its entirety in a relatively short amount of time. However, once you've seen what this gorgeous island has to offer, you will realise it warrants much more. On a short visit, choose one of the villas in Sicily located in the area you want to explore, and use it as a base for day trips. One of the least populated areas of the island is the west, and yet it is here that many of the island’s treasures can be found.

The Highlights of the Western Region

This is a truly enchanting island, and when staying in any of the villas in Sicily’s western region you will find it doesn't take long to be encapsulated by the spirit of this incredible place. Bursting with natural delights, lush countryside, spectacular scenery, ancient temples, archeological treasures, charming hilltop towns and much more, the west of the island is a place once visited, never forgotten. There are many villas in Sicily to rent in this region, and you are in for a treat if you choose to stay here.

The Temple of Segesta

The Temple of Segesta is one of the big draws of the west; set high on a hill nestled into the landscape the temple boasts some magnificent views. Built over 2400 years ago, this site is remarkably in tact. Close by the temple is the equally astounding Greek theatre, which still holds concerts in the summer months.

Scopello

Many people visit the island for its rich culture and colourful reputation, which combines the flair of Italy with a touch of something a little more down to earth, and a trip to Scopello puts you right in the heart of a typical Sicilian town. Enjoying a coffee in the stunning piazza is a great way to really experience what life is like in a Sicilian community, as locals come and go, the elderly sit around chatting and playing cards, and grocery shops throng with people buying up their day’s supplies.

Scopello is famous for its 'pane cunzato', a delicious, freshly-baked bread generously filled with tomatoes, mozzarella and anchovies and topped with the local olive oil and oregano. It makes for a delightful snack after a morning of sightseeing. As an interesting aside, the film Ocean’s Twelve was filmed here at the Tonnara - an abandoned tuna fishery.

Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro

It goes without saying that the western and northwestern coast is home to some fabulous beaches, but the natural beauty inland is also worth exploring. The Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro is the first nature reserve to have been established on the island, and it encompasses the dramatic rocky mountains that rise up from the rugged coastline below. From a base in one of the villas in Sicily’s western region, a hike in the nature reserve interspersed with dips in the hidden picture postcard bays along the way makes for a wonderful day out.
