Exploring the Historical Sights of Salzburg
Posted: Oct 14, 2014
Once you arrive into Austria by air, the quick and easy Salzburg Airport transfers will whisk you effortlessly into one of Europe’s less well-known gems. You'll be out and about exploring in no time, but just what should you see when you get there?
History
The city was a major settlement in the Roman period but fell into rapid decline and virtual ruin/abandonment by the end of the Roman period. It was re-occupied and re-built during the early Christian period. Over the following centuries, its history was turbulent like elsewhere in Europe. It went through periods of independence, incorporation into Bavaria and likewise into Austria. From the early 19th century it settled into relative serenity and certainty as a major Austrian city, though allied bombing during World War II heavily damaged parts of it.
The Architecture
The centre of the old town (which you may pass through on your Salzburg Airport transfers) is a world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site and a virtual exhibition of Renaissance and Baroque (and later period) architecture. It’s often cited as being one of the best city centres north of the Alps in that respect, and it’s possible to wander through its ancient streets and be transported back in time. The city’s architecture formed the backdrop for much of the film "The Sound of Music", so if you thought that stunning beauty was all studio-created, you’re wrong! If you're a fan of the movie, you'll be able to catch your first glimpse of many familiar sites as you travel through on the Salzburg Airport transfers.
The Sights
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here and his birthplace is usually high on the list of places to see. It is complemented by the Mozart Residence, which is an ancient building with a complex history involving different members of the composer’s family. Mozart is known to have composed several major works here.
Construction on the Hohensalzburg Fortress was started in 1077 and today its impressive presence still dominates the city. You can take a funicular railway ride up to it and its famous museum.
The Hellbrunn Palace is a marvellous 17th century palace and gardens built for the Prince Archbishop. It’s a little south of the city but in a beautiful location and is well worth seeing – including the delightful Trick Fountains.
For a complete change of theme, why not visit the Museum of Modern Art? Located across two buildings, you’ll get the chance to see the very best of the city's modern art and design but in continuity with its long artistic history and tradition.
Of course, no visit would be complete without a visit to the Salzburg Museum, which is relatively new in concept (2007) but housed in the historic centre. It concentrates not only on the royal and ‘big event’ picture of the city’s history, but also on its more ordinary people and the contributions they have made over time.
Your Salzburg Airport transfers will deliver you to a truly wonderful city, packed with culture, art, history and fine cuisine. It has more than enough keep you fully occupied for days, if you have the time!
