The French capital is one of the most visited cities in the world, and its rich history, depth of culture and vibrant modern atmosphere make it easy to understand why. If you're looking for an independent holiday, book in to one of the excellent central hostels in Paris and you'll have the freedom to explore in your own time, at your own pace and from a position right in the heart of the action.

It really doesn’t matter when you visit, the city is equally as beautiful in every season. The cafes still buzz in the cooler days of winter and the streets are alive with locals and tourists all through the year (perhaps with the exception of August when the locals leave en-masse). When staying in one of the excellent hostels in Paris, it is easy to immerse yourself in the energetic vibe of this eclectic city. Wandering down hidden side streets, browsing in antique bookstalls on the river and indulging in the café culture are all in a day’s work here.

Of course La Tour Eiffel is one of the main attractions of the city but, as it needs little introduction, we will focus on some of the other highlights.

The Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe is arguably the next most iconic monument of the city. The triumphal arch presides over the Place de l’Etoile, where 12 avenues meet and radiate out to form the famous star shape for which it gets its name. You can climb to the top of the mammoth structure and marvel at the incredible view of the city and the traffic below. The intersection is understandably chaotic, but that only adds to the atmosphere.

L'Orangerie

A visit to the Orangerie is a must on the itinerary and it's within easy access of any of the hostels in Paris. First timers are unfailingly amazed at this cultural icon and even those who have visited it before still find new and wonderful parts to explore. The work here is displayed beautifully, offering the viewer plenty of space to stand back and admire.

Among the wonderful works are the incredible Water Lily masterpieces of Monet. Imagining the artist creating these images while in his garden in Giverny is an inspiring experience. The pieces of work are displayed today as they were originally, in twin oval rooms that serve to surround the onlooker with the artist’s own vision.

There is also a collection of Walter-Guillaume’s post-impressionist work as well as Modigliani’s Nova Pilota. Once you have finished exploring the gallery you can take a stroll through the delightful Tuileries Gardens.

The Centre Pompidou

The Centre Pompidou has been a landmark feature of the city for 30 years. Existing as a cultural hub as well as an art gallery, the centre houses a fabulous collection of more than 50,000 works displayed in temporary and permanent exhibitions. More than six million people visit this incredible site every year and its library, galleries and performance spaces spaces buzz with activity every day.

Of course, this incomparable city has many more places to visit, monuments to climb and galleries to explore, but the three above will get you off to a great start. Book in to any of the excellent hostels in Paris and you'll be in the best possible place to begin.
