There are many people who prefer accommodation with the independence and freedom to explore a destination on their own terms. Hostels offer a wonderful place to stay as well as an inclusive, eclectic community of likeminded travellers with whom to share the experience.

For those travelling to The Netherlands, hostels in Amsterdam are an excellent base to stay, offering a lively, friendly atmosphere and a safe, sociable environment. This capital city is famous for its laid back vibe and relaxed way of life, but it still holds its history and rich heritage close to its heart. Outlined below are three cultural attractions within easy access of central hostels in Amsterdam that really shouldn’t be missed.

Anne Frank’s House

Within walking distance of many of the hostels in Amsterdam, Prinsengracht 263 was home to Anne Frank and her family during World War II. The 17th century house now stands as a monument to what the young Jewish girl endured before her capture by occupying forces. Anne and her family fled from Germany in 1933 and hid in secret inside the house for two years, from 1942 to 1944, when they were taken to a concentration camp. Anne kept a diary, which was published to great acclaim after the war, telling of the stoicism of her family and the friends who helped them remain hidden for so long. There is an excellent exhibition at the house, with the text available in English. The best time to go is in the morning when you can wander around without crowds.

Get Interactive With Science

Many families with children choose to stay in the hostels in Amsterdam and the science centre, NEMO, is very much a family attraction. Housed in a giant hull on Oosterdok, there is plenty to take in. Children and adults alike are unfailingly enamoured with the displays, interactive exhibitions and experimental labs, videos and music centres. A great way to enjoy lunch is to take a picnic up to the rooftop – BovenNEMO – and marvel at the views of the city.

Van Gogh’s Treasures

Van Gogh is probably the most famous son of the city and as well as being famous for his incredible use of colour, he is also commemorated for his productivity. Numerous paintings and drawings, including his Japanese prints, are displayed in this museum, which is dedicated to a permanent exhibition of his work. A visit here is not all about Van Gogh, though, and works by other artists - such as Toulouse-Lautrec - who influenced Van Gogh’s paintings are also displayed. A mammoth refurbishment saw the addition of a new wing that now houses more temporary exhibitions.

The above three suggestions are just the beginning of the wonderful attractions that await outside the doors of any of the hostels in Amsterdam. There are plenty more to be discovered in this delightfully creative and cultural city.
