What to Do In Montego Bay and Ocho Rios
Posted: Oct 17, 2014
If you think it’s all dusty roads, beachside huts and roadside bars when you get to Jamaica, luxury hotel accommodation with lush appointments and other offerings just only the first clue as to what to really expect! In Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, the two top favourite Jamaican destinations, there are plenty of exciting things to see, do and enjoy.
Here are just some of them.
Montego Bay
Christopher Columbus called Montego Bay Fair Weather Gulf (Golfo de Buen Tiempo). Now known as "the" place to go there are resorts and excellent accommodation here aplenty - some are built on old-time sugar plantations.
But what is there to do at Montego Bay? Hotels in the area offer lots of pampering spa services, but there are plenty more things to do outside as well.
Shopping. In Jamaica, luxury hotel accommodation often has a souvenir shop but you’ll have much more fun getting out and about. The Duty Free Shopping area at the City Centre and Halfmoon Shopping Village are popular stops for great finds and leisurely shopping, while souvenir hunters will want to check out the Montego Craft Market at Harbor Street. The Hip Strip at Gloucester Avenue also has colourful wares and interesting shops, although those looking for higher end shops will want to go to Fort Street.
Golf. If you’re looking to play a few holes on the island, this is the best place to start. But even if you’re not booked in to a golf resort, there are still plenty of courses to choose from. Among the most popular in Montego Bay are Cinnamon Hill, Half Moon, and The Tryall Club.
Cruises and Water Attractions. Montego Bay Yacht Club and Montego Bay Marine Park are among the best places to enjoy the waters of Jamaica. Luxury hotel accommodation in the area often has access to private beaches and water sports activities, but, if not, arrangements can be made through various tour organisers or hotel concierges.
Ocho Rios
A popular port of call for many cruise ships, Ocho Rios is near Discovery Bay, where Christopher Columbus is said to have landed. It is considered one of the most beautiful natural harbours in Jamaica. Luxury hotel accommodation in the area is often on or close to beaches so you'll be able to take full advantage of all the facilities.
Shopping. High-end plazas and quaint souvenir shops are both to be found in Ocho Rios. Island Village is right by the beach and you’ll find duty-free shops as well as other interesting stores; it also has wonderful gardens and water features. You’ll also want to check out the Taj Mahal as well as the Gem Palace Duty Free Store for precious stones and jewellery.
Golf. Whether you’re serious or just want to practice your swings, you’ll find great golf courses in Ocho Rios. Places like Sandals Golf and Country Club, Super Clubs and Breezes offer world-class facilities for the would-be Tiger Woods in you.
Water Adventures. Dunn’s River Falls is not to be missed, as it's one of the most celebrated natural wonders on the island. Hotel staff can also arrange snorkelling and diving tours, visits to Dolphin Cove and James Bond Beach.
