Car mechanics are specialized car technicians who have received specialized training in a particular area. Their job is mainly to check and repair different automobile engines and other mechanical systems. Their primary responsibility is in fixing cars, especially those manufactured by a certain brand or in a certain segment. They are also known as car mechanics in Kallangur or car service engineers.

There are many subtypes of auto mechanics such as brake, transmission, engine, transmission and many more. In most cases, a car mechanic has additional certifications that allow them to perform more than one specific service function. Most auto mechanics have at least an associate's degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited school. They usually undergo further training after getting their auto mechanic certification or licensing.

An automotive service manager is the term used for a car dealership mechanic. An AMS is also called an auto maintenance manager. This is an individual who has specialized training on how different vehicle systems work. This individual is usually assigned to a car dealership under the supervision of a manager or from an executive in the company. Most car dealership mechanics are trainee in an auto facility that hires automotive service managers.

A car dealership service manager can be a part-time employee or a full-time employee. Part-time workers are allowed to take a leave when they take up a new position. Full-time workers have to keep taking up their jobs until they retire or quit. Some car dealership mechanics have to stay with the company for a period of three years or more. There are several car dealership mechanics who have reached retirement age due to retirement benefits provided by the company.

Ase Service Advancement Program (ASAP) is another certificate issued by an automotive service management institute. The program is meant to help support technicians who want to pursue a career in mechanical engineering or design. One requires an ase certification to join this program. There are two levels in this certificate; the Basic ase and the Intermediate ase. The basic ase is for students who wish to start as mechanics and the Intermediate ase is intended for workers who want to deepen their knowledge in auto repair.

The purpose of the program is to enhance the knowledge and develop skills, not only in auto repair but also in other areas such as designing and maintaining the auto body industry's latest technological systems. The program also aims to improve auto mechanic's job outlook. Certification by any accredited automotive service management institute earns the student a qualification recognized by employers. For an auto repair shop to be considered accredited, it should regularly maintain an ase-certified technician registry.

There are currently no national qualifications for auto mechanics yet, although several states are introducing such programs. If your state is one of the few that does not yet have such a program, you can earn a certification that can either be useful for you or a good reference for your car dealership. In addition to the national certification, some states offer certification by the American Association of Automotive Service Excellence (AAASE) or the Society for Quality Automotive Service Excellence (SCASPE).

If you are a student, you can also earn your ase certification at the local car dealership that you are working with. This will make you eligible for the job as a master mechanic after graduation. Once you have obtained your ase certification, you can work as an auto mechanic in any franchised repair shop or even in an independent shop. However, to become a full fledged mechanic, you will need at least a bachelor's degree and many years of experience working on cars.
