Foods You Should Be Eating to Balance Your Hormones

Hormones affect everything in the body. Hormones, when out of balance, can cause problems in the body, including but not limited to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis and thyroid problems. It makes sense, then, that hormones should be looked after and regulated in a healthy way. Let’s take a look at how to regulate hormones.

1. Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables can help you to balance your system and detoxify your hormones. These include but are not limited to cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, bok choy and kale. These help to detoxify hormones and balance the system because they produce a phytochemical called indole-3-carbinol, which helps to promote liver function and clears out the hormones that have been “spent.”

2. Good Fats

It’s important to eat good fats every day. These help to create hormones and reduce inflammation. Avocados, nut butter, avocado oil, olive oil, flaxseed oil and unsalted and raw nuts and seeds are good to have on a regular basis.

3. Rainbow of Fruit and Vegetables

You might have heard that you should eat the rainbow in fruits and veggies. This ensures that you’re getting a wide variety of vitamins and nutrients. You should aim toward having eight servings of fruit and vegetables a day. Specifically, you should aim to have six servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit, as fruit is higher in sugar. You want to avoid spiking your blood sugar level. Serving sizes aren’t that large, either. A serving size of fruit is 4 to 6 ounces, or roughly the size of a fist, depending on the fruit.

4. Protein

Eat lean protein. You can get protein from animal sources, but many people overlook plant-based protein. You can eat beans, legumes, nuts and even vegetables, like spinach, that have protein. It’s important that you eat high-quality protein. The amount you should eat depends on your weight and exercise goals. Weightlifters, for instance, need 0.7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight to build muscle.

5. Herbs and Spices

Many people don’t consider how herbs and spices affect the body. Spices like garlic, sumac, turmeric and others help to balance hormones, and they also provide a number of other benefits for the body.

6. Whole Grains

If you eat grains, you should focus on eating whole grains that also have B vitamins. These help to balance your hormones and get rid of spent hormones. These include but are not limited to buckwheat, brown rice and quinoa.

7. Magnesium-Rich Foods

Eat a mixture of magnesium-rich food, like avocados, dark leafy greens, tofu, seeds, legumes and quinoa. These foods help the nervous system as well as reduce insulin resistance so that blood sugar levels are more consistent.

8. Microbiome Foods

Be sure to eat a diet that also contains microbiome foods, like prebiotic, probiotic and fermented foods. These help the flora inside the intestines to flourish. This is also good for your immune system and can even help to clear up some acne.
