If you're trawling through the extensive itineraries for river cruises, Italy is probably a very appealing prospect. This much-loved European country has it all – including art, culture, history and some simply spectacular waterways.

For those unfamiliar with the concept of this kind of holiday, the following FAQs may come in handy.

Where will an Italian cruise start from?

You may have a number of choices, though Venice is usually a very popular option to start and end a cruise of this type.

Do the cruises include dining?

Some, though not all, do. Those that do will serve the best local food prepared to very high standards. Some cruises combine on-board dining with the chance to eat ashore in local restaurants so that you can sample special delicacies.

Will we have to do anything while on board?

That again depends upon the nature of the cruise you select. On many, your only mandatory task will be to sit back and relax as the spectacular Italian countryside slips past! However, on some vessels the crew may welcome your interest and allow you to help.

Will we need to dress for dinner?

In terms of formal dress, no, not at all. 'Smart casual is the norm for dining on most river cruises. Italy is, in general, fairly laidback in its dress code, but somehow the locals always manage to look stylish and there will be plenty of options for you to leave the vessel to shop if you would like to try and emulate the ubiquitous Italian style!

Can we sunbathe?

Soaking up the sun, in moderation, is important for many holidaymakers. Many river barges and cruise boats will have large and extensive sundecks fully equipped with facilities. Do check though, if this is important to you, as not all may have them.

Are there exercise opportunities?

You’ll get plenty of chances to burn off those calories by walking or even cycling along the banks alongside the barge on the itinerary of many river cruises. Italy is the ideal place to explore on foot and you'll have the chance for plenty of that when you stop to visit towns or other attractions on shore.

What is the accommodation like?

There’s a wide range to choose from. Some vessels may offer a degree of economy accommodation as well as more luxurious suites. Many will offer facilities that include a spacious suite/cabin, private facilities and magnificent outside views. The vessel may also have, in addition to large public areas, an on-board bar and ‘light-bite’ facilities just in case you get peckish waiting for the next great meal to be served!

How many stops will there be?

That’s very hard to say because when it comes to river cruises, Italy's itineraries will vary from one tour to another. Almost all, however, will stop regularly for you to explore local towns and villages and other sites of interest. There will also be longer-duration stops; for example, if you’re following a River Po cruise east of Venice, you’ll get the chance to explore great historic centres such as Mantua, Chioggia and Foggia in detail.
