Services Providing Economic and Community Development

The Social Development Department (SDSD) has recently launched a project to deliver Disability Services Bankstown, which includes the provision of Employment and Training Centres (ETCs). This is part of the department's efforts to develop a bespoke policy for supporting disabled persons and their families. This marks the department's strategy to strengthen its ties with the key welfare organisations in New Zealand, particularly those based in Bankstown. According to the department, in line with the Government's Disability Discrimination Act 1992, most businesses and organisations must provide appropriate access to equipment for people with disabilities. This covers equipment such as lift chairs, wheelchair lifts and scooters.

The aim of the initiative, according to SDSD, is to ensure that all premises utilised by people with disabilities are equipped to comply with new government regulations. This would ensure better service to all disabled persons including: staff and visitors, clients and customers, and other participating parties. This approach has been followed for the establishment of training and employment Centres. In addition, the project will also allow more qualified and experienced personnel to specialize in providing more specialized services. A number of existing and reputed establishments have been targeted for this effort including The Retail Exchange (TRE), The Business Processing (BPA), The Training and Employment Service (BTESS), The Smiles Training Institute (TSI), and the Future Design Institute (FDI).

The Multi-Purpose Community (MPC) was created in order to build on the success of the existing Bankstown MPC and provide an enhanced range of facilities and programming for a broader range of residents and businesses. The MPC was established to merge the local services of Bankstown MPC, The Australian National Disability Association (ANDA), The Ministry for Social Development (MDS), The Department of Health, The National Office for Disability Services (NOS), The Social Development Ministry, and the Ministry of Education and Skills. The Multi-Purpose Community will enable improved access to development opportunities for everyone and will include a mix of community and state/territory based organizations. It is expected to enhance the commercial and recreational potential of the area.

An initiative of the New York State Governor, George Jayler, The Bankstown Arts Council (BAC) initiated a project to revitalize the pedestrian traffic in Bankstown. The aim of this project was to improve the condition and attractiveness of the pedestrian experience on major commercial streets such as Broadway, Second Avenue and John Street. BAC has also developed a website to serve as a central information source for residents and businesses.

The Arts Council of Jersey City, NJ initiated a plan to revitalize the local entertainment scene in an attempt to retain and attract new residents and visitors. The plan covers a wide range of activities and projects. The Audubon Society of Jersey City and the American Society of Professional Musicians (ASPM) have come up with a plan for a mixed-use public space in the heart of Hobson County, just outside of Hobsonburg. The project includes the renovation of an old warehouse turned into a performing arts venue and other smaller projects. This is part of the "Janes Place," a mixed-use project that includes retail, restaurant, and office buildings.

Jersey City artistically revitalized a large public park located at the foot of Manhattan's Broadway. The park is open to the public daily and provides a unique setting for local residents and visitors to take in the beauty of the city. Another large-scale development effort that recently garnered a lot of public attention is the development of a senior center in Jersey City, NJ. The center is designed to provide a high quality environment for senior citizens to enjoy activities and meet other people. The project is the brainchild of Jersey City mayor and local official Andrew Staples and is expected to cost around $100 million. The center is expected to draw in hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

In June 2021, The Catholic Archdiocese of New York announced plans to build a large, multi-purposerelocation facility on the grounds of a former 19th century blacksmith shop in Jersey City. The project, called the Archdiocesan Center for the Homeless, will include a food pantry, showers, a meeting room, a chaise lounge, and locker space for visitors. It is expected to be complete by the end of this year. Another recent addition to Jersey City's cultural scene is the opening of the new $2.5 million Crossings complex which includes a public park, a museum, and several churches. The structure is designed to look like a Victorian manor and will house the archdiocesan office and adjacent St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church.
