Posted: Oct 25, 2014
Greece is beginning to firmly place itself on the global culinary map and gain attention. With Greek cuisine having always been known for being healthy and nutritious thanks to the abundance of olive oil and healthy produce used in the creation of the cuisine’s dishes, it is no surprise that visitors make it a priority to taste the sensational dishes that this country has to offer.
This is also definitely the case in the north of Greece, especially in and around the city of Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city after its capital Athens. Influenced by the city’s history and its inhabitants throughout the centuries, Thessaloniki has come to be known for its vibrant culinary scene. Boasting a lively array of restaurants ranging from the truly gourmet through to traditional, local tavernas, Thessaloniki is considered a city where it’s actually difficult to have a bad meal; such is the pride that the locals take in their food.
Greek wines have also been making their mark, gaining popularity around the world through wines produced by dedicated small producers throughout the country. The area of Northern Greece, which produces a fine range of wines, again is no exception, and offers visitors the opportunity to discover vintages through wine tasting sessions. There are in fact, several regions or ‘wine routes’ near to the city including the Pella - Goumenissa Wine Route, the Naousa Wine Route and the Halkidiki Dionysus’ Wine Route where visitors can combine wine tasting with dining on the regions’ incredible produce and exquisitely prepared dishes.
