Writing a Thesis Statement for a Book Review – book review

Thesis statements are also included in book reviews apart from just formal essays. In reviewing a book, however, the function of the thesis statement is to evaluate a book in concise words and form a position in evaluating its positives and negatives. The function of preparing the reader on what the paper discusses remains same in both cases.

Differentiating between a thesis statement for a research paper and that of a review is crucial. You must remember that you have to review the book, evaluate it, not argue on the topic like a research paper. There is a difference in arguing and in evaluating an argument. For example, in this case you have to be the teacher who evaluates the argumentative paper, keeping your point of view aside.

Before reading the book for the purpose of writing a review, you must keep in mind certain things that you would want to evaluate a book on. You have to critically analyze the book's components in certain aspects and if you do not keep those factors in your mind, chances are that you would not know how to analyze the book in a certain aspect and you might have to read it again.

The first thing that is included in the thesis statement of a book review is the subject of the book or the main argument presented in a book. The second thing is your evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the book, or your point of view, where it lacks and what it contributes to the previous ideas. A thesis statement always takes a stance, so you cannot be indifferent in the review. Critical analysis brings forward the strengths and weaknesses of the book which have to be mentioned in the thesis. Thirdly, in order to support your claim, the thesis has to have some concrete reasoning and justification. In the thesis, focus on the specifics rather than a broad overview. It might mean not mentioning some points, but then to be specific is the point of the thesis.

For writing an effective thesis, focus on literary terms to indicate that it is that of a review. For this, read thesis statements of other reviews to get a gist of how to attract readers to reading the whole of it. Mark the ones that lured you into reading the whole review and study how the writer has composed it. Do not plagiarize, just read it out to get an idea on how to form yours.
