What is EBS volume?

An EBS volume is a block of data storage in the cloud that persists independently from an instance. EBS volumes act like hard disks and can be attached to any running instance. EBS volume can exist detached (attached only once) and it's possible to mount EBS volume on multiple EC2 instances at different times.

EBS volumes come in three flavors: General Purpose (SSD), Provisioned IOPS (SSD) and Magnetic with all having their own use cases. EBS volumes are primarily used as durable, highly available, block level storage devices with storage capacity measured in GBs or TBs.

E-Business Suite supports the following EBS Volumes:
  • General Purpose (SSDs) with sizes 10, 20, 40, 80 GBs
  • Provisioned IOPS (SSDs) volumes with sizes 100, 200, 400 and 800 GBs
  • Magnetic volumes with sizes 1 TB, 2 TB or 4 TB EBS support network file system (NFS) interface. EBS volumes are ideal for applications that require high throughput data transfer at low latency between E-Business Suite databases and E-Business Suite instances. EBS volume is the default storage option for E-Business Suite database files.
EBS volume is usually configured as the root device of an Oracle database instance if there are no plans to use ASM for managing disks in cluster mode.

E-Business Suite also supports Database File Share feature, which provides a scalable NAS based solution for E-Business Suite where EBS volume is used as backend storage.

EBS volume offers the following benefits over Database File Share:
  • E-Business Suite instance supports direct access to EBS volumes via SCSI interface while EFS needs E-Business Suite instance to mount NFS share which incurs network latency.
  • E-Business Suite instances are not required to do any file system mounting or initialization which reduces installation effort for customers using EBS volumes.
  • EFS supports only one server where EBS volume allows multiple servers accessing the same device simultaneously compared with one Server Access Point (SAP) allowed in case of EFS.

What is EBS?

EBS stands for Elastic Block Storage and it's basically a disk (storage) that you can connect and then onto your instance(s). EBS volumes are referred to as block storage because the EBS volume acts like a virtual hard drive. The EBS volume can be attached to any running instance just like attaching an EBS volume that you have already created. E-Business Suite supports 3 different types of EBS volumes: "General Purpose (SSD)", "Provisioned IOPS (SSD)" and "Magnetic". E-Business Suite General Purpose SSD EBS Volume allows creation of volumes up to 1 TB, Provisioned IOS EBS enables users to create various size volumes from 100GB - 800GB, Magnetic EBS creates up to 4TB disks.

What are EBS Volume Benefits?

EBS volumes offer the following benefits over EFS:

  1. E-Business Suite instances can directly access the storage via SCSI while EFS requires virtualizing NFS shares which incurs network latency.
  2. Instances do not have to do any file system mounting or initialization which reduces installation efforts for customers using EBS.
  3. More than one server can access the EBS volume at a time. EFS allows only one server to access the EBS volume at a time. E-Business Suite EBS volume is supported on E-Business Suite 12.0.4 or later releases while EFS is supported for all E-Business Suite releases starting from E-Business Suite 11i. E

EBS Types:-

General Purpose SSD EBS Volume allows creation of volumes up to 1 TB, Provisioned IOPS EBS enables users to create various size volumes from 100GB - 800GB, Magnetic EBS creates up to 4TB disks.

Which EBS volume type should be used?

Provisioned IOPS EBS is recommended over General Purpose SSD EBS for high IO applications. Magnetic EBS offer the lowest price compared with other EBS types and works well if you have low IO requirements. If your application is using more than 80% of disk space then go for Magnetic EBS. Otherwise provisioned IOPs or General purpose SSD EBS are preferred based on the applications need. There are cases where magnetic disks are preferred due to its economical price tag. E-Business Suite EBS volume is supported on E-Business Suite 12.0.4 or later releases while EFS is supported for all E-Business Suite releases starting from E-Business Suite 11i. E-Business Suite EBS volume is often used for E-Business Suite R12 databases when EFS cannot be used ( i.e, EBMS instances are not in the same network or EFS disks are not exposed to EBS instance).
