The Devkund waterfall is one of nature’s hidden gems in the dense forest of Mangaon. This place is a great stress buster and a little less affected by commercialization. It is located near the village of Bhira close to Tamhini Ghat in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra. The word Devkund, "Dev" meaning gods, and "Kund" meaning a small natural lake where water that has fallen as rain and thus it is also called as "bathing pond of gods". It is a ‘plunge’ waterfall pouring massive amounts of water on the rocky surface underneath. It is perfect for backpackers and families wanting a vacation altogether. The Kundalika River originates at defunding. Even though there isn’t much history associated with the falls, the locals here believe that once upon a time utensils used to from the pond whenever there was a special auspicious ceremony happening in the village nearby. You can do river rafting at Kundalika River as a fun activity there too.

The place has its charm with the water dropping from a height of over 80 ft. straight into a pond of approximately 30 mt. diameter and altitude of waterfalls is about 2700 ft. The waterfall is a must-visit in India and is great for the ones planning a small trip. It is a one-day Trek and would roughly take about 3-5 hours to complete. The trek route is a Jungle trail and is about 3 km. If you are a beginner at trekking, this is a good place to visit. You can also check out the urban Jungle trek which also begins from the Bhira village.

How To Reach Devkund Waterfall?

Regarding distance, it is about 110 km away from Pune, 170 km from Mumbai, and just 50 km from Lonavala.

The way to reach is either Airways, Railways or you can plan a road trip. The nearest airport is Pune airport and for the ones taking an International flight Mumbai Airport is the closest. The nearest railway junctions are Konkan Railway, which is 30 km away or you can opt for Lonavala railway station on Central Railway which is 82 km away. If you want to reach via Roadways then you have to first to reach Karjat went to Pali and from there to Bhira village.

The best months to visit are October to mid-November to click better pictures and have an amazing experience at the falls. It is just after the monsoon and has pleasant weather at the time. It is closed from July to September for tourist when the rain is at peak. The trek is easy in difficulty and very picturesque. The mountains are filled with numerous tiny waterfalls which only adds to the experience in the monsoon season. The trek can be dangerous in the rainy season because of the water levels rising but with the proper equipment and experienced guide, you should be safe. If possible, call the locals at the falls and check if it is open for visitors or not when planning.

Important instructions

• Carry 2 liters of water as there won’t be any water sources available for drinking purposes.
• Pack a mosquito repellent with you.
• Sunglasses.
• Waterproof backpack.
• Bedsheet or mat to take rest during the trek.
• Sunscreen lotion.
• Umbrella or raincoat in case of unexpected rain.
• Scarf or hat to avoid the sun.
• Energy drinks or bars.
• Extra pair of clothes to change if you get wet.
• Make sure you have a torch.
• Pack a good pair of running shoes.
• Wear a jacket in case you are visiting in the months of monsoon.
• Swimming is not allowed at the falls.
• Camping near a waterfall isn’t allowed as it is risky.
• If you are in a group, always stick together as the path can get confusing at times.
• Do not try to venture into the forest area.
• Try not to carry any edibles to the sanctuary or near the waterfalls to avoid littering or unwanted curiosity from the animals there.
• The parking fee is rupees 30 for two-wheelers and rupees 50 for four-wheelers.
• Entry at the check post by Bhira Gram Panchayat charges rupees 10 per person and you will get the kacchi receipt.
• You can get a guide for just rupees 50 to 200. You can ask for the same at the entry counter.
