If you are lucky enough to be going to Thailand on holiday then congratulations and enjoy your trip! You should be aware though that Thailand poses some health risks though for travellers to the country. As such we have made a list as recommended by NathNac, of the possible health risks you may face during your time there, as well as the vaccinations for Thailand that you should have before your trip.

Firstly there are several general health risks you should be aware of before you visit Thailand. There is a higher risk of food and waterborne diseases as well as sexually transmitted diseases in Thailand than there are in the UK. Moreover issues resulting from a lack of sun protection and a lack of protection from insects are also common for travelers to the country. Be aware of these health risks and act accordingly.

When it comes to what you need in terms of vaccinations for Thailand, you must also be aware of specific diseases that it is possible you could contract. These include Yellow Fever, Cholera, Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, Tetanus, Tuberculosis and Typhoid. However you will need vaccinations for only some of these diseases.

Starting with the most important vaccinations for Thailand, you should not travel to the country without a vaccination against Diptheria (including a booster if your vaccination was more than 10 years ago), Hepatitis B, Tetanus (also including a booster) and Tuberculosis. These are contagious diseases that are common throughout most parts of the country and as such you should have these vaccinations for travel to Thailand.

Several diseases are only pose an issue if you are taking part in certain activities in certain parts of the country. These activities include but are not limited to, work in disaster areas, rural areas and as health professionals. For these people, vaccinations for Thailand include Cholera, Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies.

The following vaccinations are not necessary for Thailand; Yellow Fever and Typhoid, but the Typhoid vaccination again may be given to those whose extenuating circumstances put them in an area of risk.

Finally in regards to Hepatitis A, because the hepatitis A vaccine is well tolerated and affords long-lasting protection, it may be given to all previously unvaccinated travelers. The Vaccine should also be given to those with chronic liver disease or haemophilia, men who have sex with men, injecting drug users and those at occupational risk.

These are all of the vaccinations for Thailand that you need to be aware of. Please make sure you get all the vaccinations you need, and stay vigilant to possible health risks whilst in country. Enjoy your trip!
