The SAP MM (Material Management) Module is a SAP ERP component that assists enterprises in the supply chain process with material management, inventory management, and warehouse management. It's an element of SAP ECC's logistics functions, which are made up of a number of different components and sub-components. Master Data, Purchasing, and Inventory are the most notable and commonly utilised components.

All of these components have subcomponents that are required for specific business processes, and all of the operations are carried out using SAP MM process flow transactions.

In SAP, a transaction is defined as the processing of specific data in order to fulfil a business process requirement. If you've purchased ten litter buckets, for example, you can use a specific transaction code (t-code) to represent those changes in SAP. The majority of business operations need the completion of several SAP transactions and are distributed across one, two, or more modules.

Let's take a quick look at the several sub-modules in SAP Materials Management in this SAP MM basics tutorial:

There are two types of data: master data and transactional data.

In SAP materials management, master data is the basic data that serves as the foundation for all transactions. Whatever you're doing, whether you're creating, transferring stock, selling, purchasing, or doing a physical inventory, you'll need to keep track of certain master data.

Master Data Example

master data for materials

Data from the customer master file

Vendor master information

Pricing/conditions master information

Master data for warehouse management (storage bin master data)

SAP MM's business Banefits

Everything in MM revolves around master data, which is centralised and kept in master-data tables. Materials master, work centre, bill of materials, and routing are examples of master data types. In SAP ECC, master data is utilised to build transactional data.

When a production order is established in PP, for example, master data from MM regarding the raw materials needed to produce the finished product is used, and then a sales order is created in SD.
