Salzburg is a very cultural city and, as you might imagine, it has an excellent selection of museums to explore during a holiday spent there. Once you have arranged your Salzburg airport transfers and you have settled into your accommodation, try and visit a selection of these museums to discover more about the history and culture of this fascinating city.
Salzburg Museum
The first museum to visit for a good overview of the history of the city itself is Salzburg Museum. It is located inside the Neue Residenz Palace, which has been its home since 2007 –you may pass by the building on your Salzburg airport transfers. Inside you will find artefacts relating to art, architecture, music, science and more, as well as multimedia exhibits that will bring to life the story of the city.
The Toy Museum
The Toy Museum (Spielzeugmuseum) is another interesting place to visit once you have arrived on your Salzburg airport transfers. Here you will find an impressive collection of antique toys, including dolls, educational toys and musical instruments, as well as interactive items. There are also interesting temporary exhibitions held throughout the year.
Two Mozart Museums
There are actually two museums dedicated to the famous composer. The first is the house where he was born and where he lived for his early years, which is now full of instruments, artefacts and documents related to his life, including his childhood violin. The other museum, Mozart’s Residence, is in the house where he lived later in life, and you will find it on Makartplatz.
The Festungsmuseum
The Festungsmuseum (Fortress Museum) is a small museum inside the Festung Hohensalzburg - you have to visit the castle to access the museum. You can explore the history of the castle through the displays of interesting artefacts, including Roman items and ancient weapons.
Museum der Moderne
The Museum der Moderne (Museum of Modern Art) is located on the Mönchsberg, and it houses an excellent collection of contemporary art by Austrian and international artists. It covers four floors, and temporary exhibitions are also held regularly. You can enjoy wonderful views of the city, especially from the restaurant.
The Dommuseum
At the Dommuseum (Cathedral Museum) you can enjoy paintings and sculpture dating back centuries. As well as the ancient artefacts on display, you can also enjoy some beautiful views over the old town.
After you've settled in from your Salzburg airport transfers and you are ready to explore, make sure some of these museums are on your list of things to see. There are so many attractions in the city worth exploring, but the museums are a definite highlight.
