Kakadu National Park, an enormous nature reserve in the Northern Territory, is a timeless place that is home to many kinds of ecosystems including woodlands, floodplains, tidal mudflats, open forests, mangroves and coastal areas. Here are some amazing places within the National Park that shouldn’t be missed!

The Yellow Water Billabong

Located at the tail end of Jim Jim Creek, the Yellow Water Billabong is an expansive wetland that is home to abundant wildlife and features many scenic cruises and boardwalk views. One of the most interesting experiences you can sign up for while you’re here is a Yellow water cruise. These cruises operate year round and offer spectacular views of the rich and ever-changing vistas of billabong. Join an indigenous-owned Yellow river cruise to discover a range of wildlife including crocodiles and eagles. The wildlife along the river keeps changing, like how the light keeps changing throughout the day. Book your cruise today!

Walk Among the Ancient Shelter at Nourlangie

Go for the 1.5km round stroll through what was the wet season home for ages of Aboriginal individuals. Meander past the huge stone safe house and posts to one of Australia's most extraordinary Aboriginal stone workmanship destinations that show old associations between individuals and their property. Visit the area between May and November close by Anbangbang Billabong for a stunning perspective back to Nourlangie.

Australia’s Best Aboriginal Rock Art at Ubir

Roam around Ubirr—the other of Kakadu's dazzling Aboriginal rock art destinations—to see the diverse workmanship styles Kakadu is renowned for. See x-ray artworks that show the plentiful bush tucker nearby, like fish, wallabies, goannas, echidnas, waterfowl, and sweet potatoes. In Ubirr's most prominent display, see samples of rock art addressing one of the major historic records of the largest single gathering of people in the area. Approach the post for magnificent perspectives on the encompassing floodplains - the ideal spot to watch the dusk.

Swim in the Pools at Maguk

Stroll through the beautiful monsoon rainforest and slip into the perfectly clear rock pools at Maguk (also known as Barramundi Gorge), an isolated natural swimming hole in Kakadu's stone country located on the southern end of the Park. Enjoy the rush of being under the falls then, climb to the highest point of the cascade to its rough stages and another unmistakable, profound dive pool flanked by tall bluffs. You can spend the night in Maguk's bush campground. A Four-wheel-drive is required.

Bushwalk in Kakadu

Lace up your boots and go one of the 30 amazing walking trails in Kakadu, from short, simple walks to challenging multi-day treks. Wander around to see the stunning rock art sites, move to the highest point of cascading waterfalls and plunge pools, climb along slopes or spot birds and untamed life on a walk around a billabong. Keep to the assigned ways and take a lot of water, a cap and sunscreen. Another unavoidable experience is the free guided strolls through Kakadu's Aboriginal rock art displays where park officers share stories behind the art. They operate on all days from April to October.

Birdwatch at Mamukala Wetlands

Go for the simple stroll to an observation platform concealed in the paperbarks at the Mamukala wetlands, one of Kakadu's best bird watching destinations(situated 30km from Jabiru). Watch silently as kites, jacanas, cormorants, purple swamp hens and kingfishers feed. A mural displays the seasonal changes consistently. The wetlands are lovely all year round. However, it shows dramatic changes in the late dry season (September to November) when a huge number of honking magpie geese come to the area to dig for water chestnuts.
