In today’s world, where most people suffer from anxiety, stress and depression, the teachings of Buddha seem to be the apt medicine to fill their life with contentment and happiness. The religion doesn’t put forth any strange beliefs but it’s about living a happy and peaceful life, steering clear of all kind of miseries. As one attains deep insight, they get to truly understand themselves and learn to look at the good side of everything, just as the happiest folks do.
How Siddhartha Gautama turned Buddha?
It was in the sixth century B.C. that Siddhartha Gautama was born in Lumbini, which falls in Nepal, to Suddhodana, who ruled Sakya clan. At the time of Siddhartha’s birth, Suddhodana was told by the astrologers that his son is likely to follow his own path. Scared of the thought, his father provided him with all kind of luxuries in a sheltered environment, keeping him away from the sight of worldly miseries and pains. However, one day out of curiosity, Siddhartha ventured out of the palace in order to get a clear picture of the outer world and during this he came across the realism that life puts forth unavoidable suffering, in form of old age, disease and death.
After knowing these facts, none of the pleasures of lavish life enticed him anymore and the very next day, he left the palace and embarked on the quest for enlightenment. For the period of six years, he ensured stringent ascetic practices, studied as well as complied with various methods of meditation, seeking help from several religious teachers. However, he still came out unsatisfied and then one fine day he realized that physical rigors doesn’t lead to freedom and then he endorsed The Middle Way, a path of balance instead of extremism. Soon after that he sat under the Bodhi Tree, where he attained enlightenment after few days of meditation. Then till the age of 80, he went over to several places in order to deliver sermons that helped others in reaching enlightenment.
Buddhism beliefs
In this religion, the followers don’t believe in a personal god and they deeply egg on impermanence, i.e. change is inevitable. Enlightenment can be reached through morality, meditation and wisdom as well as by accepting that life is subject to impermanence, suffering and uncertainty.
