Is booking through Chase Travel worth it?
Posted: Apr 18, 2022
You've booked your trip using your Chase travel credit card, but you're still not sure whether or not you got the best deal available. You decide to ask the agent at your local Chase branch about it and discover that booking through them might save you money on some of the expenses related to your trip! If you need help figuring out whether booking through Chase travel might be worth it, we've put together this guide to help you out.
Should you get The Sapphire Reserve? In a word, yes. The Sapphire Reserve card is an amazing deal for travel rewards—a $300 travel credit offsets the $450 annual fee that you can use on any non-travel expenses and a Priority Pass membership, which lets you bypass long lines at airport lounges around the world. In addition to those perks, you get 3x points on every dollar spent on travel and dining out and 1 point per dollar everywhere else.
You also earn double points on all trips taken over 50 miles from your home zip code. The signup bonus alone is worth $750 if used right. When booking through Plannay Travel, the bonus points are just icing on top of one of our favorite rewards cards available today.
Travel Fees: Will They Get You?There are various hidden fees and expenses that we encounter in our everyday lives. While many companies and establishments strive to inform their customers about these costs, there are still many of them that slip through the cracks. One example of such hidden charges is traveling. When searching for flights online, there can be several additional costs attached to your ticket price: cancellation fees, baggage fees... Booking Through Chase - Worth It?: A frequent flier card is one of many tools in your arsenal for saving money when you travel. Some prefer cashback or miles bonuses instead, but those benefits don't stack up well against an airline-branded credit card.
Redemption Values - Now We're Getting SeriousUp until now, we've focused primarily on airline travel, but you have options. The Chase Sapphire Preferred card also gives you 2X points on dining at restaurants and 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases. Your points are redeemable for cash back and travel booked through Ultimate Rewards (including more than a dozen big airlines and hotels).
By using your Ultimate Rewards points, you can maximize your rewards value. Here are some example redemption values for one-way flights: $500-$750 United Airlines; $500-$600 American Airlines; $355-$400 Delta Air Lines; $350-$450 Southwest Airlines.
Trip Cancellation/Interruption CoverageThis is one of those things that everyone should have, but some people don't realize they need it. Because life happens and travel can be unpredictable, having trip cancellation/interruption coverage can make a huge difference if you find yourself in a less-than-ideal situation.
Lost tickets, lost luggage, emergency medical problems -- these are all covered by your trip insurance policy as long as you have purchased at least a basic level of coverage from Chase (more than $250). If something goes wrong on your trip -- or worse, after you return home -- you'll be glad to know that an effective trip insurance policy covers you.
Lost Luggage Coverage & Liability ProtectionWhen you book a flight, cruise, or hotel room with Chase and use your Sapphire Reserve card, you get more travel protection than cash buying an identical travel package. While basic coverage is similar, Sapphire Reserve's exclusive coverage provides reimbursement of up to $10,000 per person for personal property when luggage or other belongings are lost or stolen from your checked bags on a trip booked through chase travel. You also receive reimbursement for trip cancellation/interruption expenses if you have to cancel your journey before departure due to circumstances beyond your control. Finally, accidental death and dismemberment insurance covers eligible cardholders and their immediate family members. In some cases, coverage can extend up to $1 million.
Primary Auto Rental Collision/Loss Damage InsurancePurchasing travel insurance could save you some serious cash on a canceled trip. Many credit cards offer two types of coverage: purchase protection and extended warranty protection. The first reimburses you for a canceled trip due to unforeseen circumstances like bad weather or sickness and is valid for up to 90 days after purchase.
Extended warranty protection extends your product's warranty by up to one year, depending on when you purchased your card. Both are great financial protections, so make sure to check what kind of travel benefits your credit card offers before buying.
Emergency Evacuation & Transportation CoveragePurchasing items with your credit card will provide you with some protection. For example, when you buy something using your Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (either online or in-store), you'll get free purchase protection and extended warranty protection. Purchase Protection covers eligible purchases if they are damaged or stolen within 90 days of purchase—you can be reimbursed up to $500 per claim and $50,000 per account. Extended Warranty Protection doubles whatever is currently covered by the original manufacturer's warranty—up to one additional year on warranties of five years or less and two other years on warranties of more than five years.
Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty ProtectionThrough your rewards, credit card, purchasing travel will grant you purchase protection and extended warranty protection. You'll also have limited travel accident insurance coverage if you buy airfare with your rewards credit card. However, purchases made outside of a rewards credit card don't provide these features. Suppose you book a flight directly with an airline or a hotel by visiting their website or calling customer service instead of buying from an online travel agency like Expedia or Orbitz. In that case, these special benefits won't be present for your trip.
