Independent Play Items For Kids (to Save Your Sanity This Summer)

We're heading into summer!

...are you excited or panicked?

I'll confess. I teeter between both.

One day I can't wait to hang by the pool with my kiddos.

And the next I'm watching them duke it out over a spaghetti noodle wondering if I'll survive.

But then, the other day, I came across a mom asking about things for her kids to play independently for long periods of time without screens.

She wanted something for when she needs to work or get things done in the summer. But she didn't want to have to set up and clean up a bunch of activities.

And I immediately thought: That. Is. Genius.

I mean, wouldn't a list of these be a huge sanity saver when the days get long?

So...here a few of the best items to keep your kids engaged, without mom's help or constant supervision:

Independent Play Toys For Toddlers

First, these items are great fun for young ones, though I can tell you my older kids (ages 8 and 10) play with them too.

1. Water table

A kiddie pool can turn into work. But a water table? Now that's something your little one can do even if you can't join in on the water fun.

2. Magna tiles

I was late to the party with Magna Tiles, but I've been so impressed with how long they keep all my kids' attention.

3. Kitchen play stuff

My toddler will dive into her own world as soon as I say "will you please make me some food?"

4. Wooden train set

  • A train set is perfect because you can build it in so many different ways. Which means your child will be drawn to this toy for longer.

5. Car play mat with cars

One easy rug can make for hours of fun if you use cars to drive around.

6. A bucket of dinosaurs

A bucket of anything that your child love is perfect for independent play. If your child prefers barbies or baby things, this will work equally as well.

Independent Play Items For Older Kids

Next, these can keep the older ones busy instead of complaining they're bored.

1. Sprinklers and water guns

Almost all kids are drawn to water. And if you kick them outside and put the sprinklers on, they'll keep themselves entertained all day. Just don't forget the sunscreen.

2. Books

If your kids are older, they can get lost in more complex stories. Both my big kids disappear into a book after we hit the library, and I usually have to coax them out of their imaginations with food.

Books for younger kids are still good too: See this best book list for 3 year olds

3. Legos

Not all kids will be into Legos, but if you have a kid that is...it's the BEST for independent play. My 10 year old has spent HOURS in his room creating things on his own (since he was four).

That's the starter list!

Should I turn this into a full article? Let me know if you'd find it helpful and I'll get to work!
