A waterfront destination has a special charm that always attracts life. In the case of big cities with waterways, there are greater chances for the city to flourish as did many civilizations of yore. It was only a few years ago I decided to follow my travelling dreams and to date, my passion for meeting new people and places has kept growing. Here is a list of some of the world’s most beautiful waterfront cities that I loved the most and are worth adding to your bucket list.

Sydney

The capital of the Land Down Under, Sydney is a wonderful metropolitan city that boasts world-class beaches, natural beauty and waterfront landmarks including the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Visitors and locals usually huddle around the harbour, more so, to enjoy the stunning harbour vistas. There are some amazing ways you can enjoy the harbour at its best including the waterfront restaurants in the area, Sydney lunch cruise, the ferry and more. Of all the visitors in the city, some stay for its unparalleled views while some stay for its plethora of cultural and wildlife attractions. You can hop aboard a harbour bus tour or a sightseeing/lunch cruise to cover the amazing attractions from prime vantage points and perhaps have a drink or two.

Amsterdam

With historic homes and beautiful streets, the Dutch capital is perfect for roaming around. And what makes it even more beautiful? Its picturesque latticework canals, where you can spend a leisurely day on the water enjoying the amazing waterfront surrounds. On sunny days, the cafes situated along the 60 miles of the canals, fill up with visitors. You can stop by the Canal Ring to get a glimpse of historic homes or simply have a leisurely day out on the water. Amsterdam is also home to the world-famous Van Gogh Museum which regularly hosts changing shows of the painter’s works.

Venice

It would be outrageous if a list of the world’s best waterways or waterfront cities were to omit Venice entirely. Because such is its beauty–timeless and enchanting. With shimmering canals that quietly flow side-by-side with sprawling palaces, beautiful cathedrals and Byzantine monuments. This aesthetically gifted waterfront destination is also home to a secluded island Torcello with a magical ambience. To discover some of the city’s best boutiques, you must stop by the Piazza San Marco. Basilica di San Marco is one of the must-see Byzantine monuments in the world that is nestled amidst the charming waterways of Venice. At the end of your day in the city, spend time at one of the wine bars, also known as ‘bacari’, where you can enjoy traditional Venetian tapas and local wines.

Vancouver

With a distinctive cosmopolitan flair and a captivating natural beauty, Vancouver is one of the most unique waterfront cities in the world. The city boasts an impressive harmony between its well-preserved natural environment with a host of tourist attractions and urban life. Head to Stanley Park to be amidst the city’s serene forests and oceanfront. You could take a ferry to Granville Island to explore its buzzing food and crafts market, dozens of studios and galleries. The city also has a Chinatown where you can enjoy the authentic taste of Chinese food and culture.

San Sebastian

Located on a scallop-shaped beach in Spain, San Sebastian is one of Europe’s most popular waterside destinations. The city has a towering promontory offering unparalleled panoramic views of Vancouver’s gardens, parks and spectacular blue bays. For the best views, you could visit La Concha or rent a room at one of the restaurants near here. From lavishly decorated salons to recently renovated rooms, there are many luxury accommodation options in the area. Visit San Sebastian during the summer months for a fantastic vacation.
