Mother who purchased €1,300 Communion dress that didn't fit: 'My daughter still cries over it'

A woman who purchased a €1300 Communion dress for her daughter’s big day has told how the day was "ruined" because the dress was too small.

RTE’s Liveline today heard how one woman's daughter had dreamed of her big day since she was four years of age and designed the dress with experienced dressmaker Thelma Madine in Liverpool, England.

However, the little girl became dismayed when she still had not received the dress on the day before the Communion Day.

The Liveline caller Carla said: "Since my daughter was four years of age that’s all she wanted. She saw Big Fat Gypsy wedding and that’s all she wanted."

"I gave her a deposit and I was told the dress would be ready in March. And I was also told that I would be sent pictures and updates of fabrics and what the dress looked like, but I didn't receive them."

"I was trying to kid myself that it wasn’t all going horribly wrong."

She said her daughter’s day was "ruined" because she felt "different" in the dress which was too small, and Carla would like a written apology from Thelma over what happened.

"My daughter’s dress didn’t fit."

"She felt a little bit out and different because she had to wear a dress where her stomach was sticking out because the dress was too small."

"First of all, I’d like a written apology to my daughter – she can never get her Communion back."

"My daughter still cries when she sees Thelma on the television."

Carla told how she spent the night before her daughter’s Communion Day on May 24 waiting in a hotel for the dressmaker to hand over the specially designed dress.

Thelma, who made up to 70 communion dresses this year for the Irish market, says Irish consumers pay her up to €3,500 for communion dresses.

She says she will personally apologise to Carla’s daughter for the ill-fitting dress.

"I’m holding my hands up here. Last year was the first year that I have ever, ever let anyone down."

"I took too much on and I shouldn’t have done... I totally regret it. I did offer to post it the week before."

"I will give her daughter a written apology."
