How to motivate yourself to workout alone
Posted: Jun 16, 2022
I have a question for you.
Have you ever tried to water ski in a puddle while balancing a fork on your finger? Me neither. But working out alone sounds about as easy as that does sometimes.
Working out alone is hard, but it can also be really fun. I have come to like working out by myself as much as I enjoy working out with someone else.
Some basic tips for working out alone include the following:
- Pick a time to workout and stick to it. (If you can, find a time before breakfast to workout, because that has been shown to maximize fat oxidation levels. At the very least, though, simply find a time of day when you can consistently workout at least 3 times a week.)
- Use YouTube videos so that you have someone to guide and motivate you.
- Put motivational fitness quotes in your workout area to encourage you. (I have some great female motivational fitness quotes on my site.)
- Create a workout routine to help make fitness a part of everyday life. (Workout your legs on one day, your arms on another, etc. I like to feel in control of what I'm doing, so having this kind of routine motivates me.)
- Listen to motivational speakers before working out.
- Use good music. (I, at least, look forward to working out more when I know that I can listen to something I enjoy. Find your tunes and rock out to them!)
- Set a timer for your workout. (Knowing that you only have to workout for a set time can be very helpful. It's also great for tight schedules. I have done as short as 5 - 10 minutes when I don't have a lot of time, and I just did quick hit things like push-ups, leg lifts, planks, etc.)
- Sign up for a workout class. (This will help you to find people who can motivate you. It can also hold you accountable. Oh, and it doesn't have to be in-person; there are fun online classes you can do if you can't make it to a class in person.)
- Stick. To. Your. Guns. When you make a goal, keep it no matter what, even if it means that you have to workout at 1 a.m. because you missed your normal workout time. If you do that, you will go far. If you don't, I can guarantee that your fitness streak will last about 20 minutes.
In my opinion, that last tip is the most important. Stick to your goal and never say "I'll do it tomorrow." Just do it. You've got this!
Go ahead and go implement these tips, and let me know how it goes. Good luck to you in your journey!
