Posted: Nov 28, 2014
IT management has been in a changing phase since sometime. It has now spread its focus from helping business to also managing technology also. The concept has come up in such way that to help the business organizations achieve their goals, the technologies have to at first manage their own focus and goals. This is the reason many of the organizations have started adopting methods like ITIL now in their working. ITIL or Information Technology Infrastructure Library has turned in recently to be a perfect way for many organizations to achieve their set goals.
But this is noticed that due to some obstacles, some of the organizations are slow at adopting the method of ITIL at present. This is because many people assume that the best time to do such experiments and to take such initiatives is during any downturn of the business. This is the time when it can be proved that how much effective the new method is and also various problems can be also solved that has led to the downturn of the company. It has been also noticed that organizations adopting the methods of ITIL are having more accelerating investments and have a continuous improvements in their survival.
ITIL was developed by the U.K. Office of Government Commerce in the year of 1980 and since then it took almost 10 years for ITIL to come properly to light. Its actual rise was seen only since and after the year of 1990. The library was published by The U.K. Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency. ITIL or Information Technology Infrastructure Library is mainly the set of documented policies that are required in the management of service and infrastructure of any IT industry. It is needed as a bridge between the IT facilities in an organization and the business strategies of that particular organization.
The main goal of ITIL is to provide structured guidelines for IT management as per the government standards to the organizations. Among the various ways through which this particular goal is achieved is by increasing the satisfaction of the user, lowering the cost and many other related facilities and operations. But also there are some of the drawbacks of the method, such as higher costs on the training process and lengthy process of implementation. This may somehow lead to a slow process of increase in investment of the organization over the time.
An overall summary can say that the method of ITIL has both potential advantages along with some of the drawbacks. Some of the benefits of ITIL can of lowering user cost and increasing customer satisfaction, increasing alignment between IT and business, improving measuring ability of performance, improving IT goals and communications and increasing management changes. Some of the drawbacks say time taking effects, extensive training, sometimes disruptive due to certain changes, short term needs cannot be fulfilled.
Thus there are both positive and negative sides of the method and thus it can be suggested to implement it at the right time.
