Gateway of India
A monument built by the British during colonial rule to welcome the then monarch of England in the beginning of 20th century. It is an arch monument built in the Indo-Saracenic architecture style overlooking the Arabian sea.
The Gateway of India is open for the public throughout the year. However the pleasant time to visit the place is in the morning and evening as the days are quite hot in Mumbai except in the monsoons. It’s best to sit and watch the sunsets whilst sipping a cup of tea along with some snacks which can be bought from the street vendors. There is also an amazing sea ferry, speed boat and sail boat rides available to add more charm to the evening. Marine drive
Marine drive is a beautiful Arabian Sea facing 3km C-shaped boulevard in South Mumbai. Planted with beautiful palm trees which magnificently beautifies the scene, and over and above the street lights in this bay area gives an extra oomph factor to the bay area making it look like a Queen’s necklace, hence a nickname as Queen’s Necklace It is the best spot in Mumbai for hanging out, walking, watching sunset and sunrise.
Juhu beach
As Mumbai is a coastal city there are plenty of wonderful beaches and Juhu Chowpatty Beach is one of them. This beach stands out from the rest as this area is home to Celebrities, Exquisite Boutiques, high end restaurants and even some budget friendly street foods provided by the vendors to give you the taste of Mumbai. This place has a good ambience for evening strolls as you can feel the fresh and salty breeze from the sea. It is a popular escape from the hustle bustle of people and the concrete jungle. This hilltop garden overlooking the Arabian Sea gives a spectacular sunset view.
Aksa beach
Aksa beach is a less visited beach as it is at a distance from the city. In Mumbai generally people visit here during the weekends. You may visit here for its pristine view and the melodies of the sea. The Best time to visit here is in the evenings.
Madh Island
Madh Island is a perfect escape from the city life to the abode of bliss. Here you will be blessed with abundance of sunshine, beaches, sea foods. This island also houses historical forts and churches which were built by the Portuguese during the 16th Century. The island also has beautiful flora, nightlife, weekend parties as well as bungalows for rent which could be rented and enjoyed.
Chatrpati Shivaji Terminus
Chatrpati Shivaji Terminus is a railway station built by the British in the Gothic Style of architecture, constructed to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee Celebration and hence it was named as Victoria Terminus which was later changed to Chatrpati Shivaji Terminus. The building has beautiful cathedral-like spires, turrets, arches, Corinthian columns and stained glass windows. While visiting, mind the traffic.
Elephanta caves
The caves are located on an island which is 11km from Mumbai. These caves are the temples which date back to the 5th to 7th Century. You may take a ferry ride from Gateway of India to visit here. You will find yourself in history once you visit the place. Mumbai skyline is also visible from here and there is also a trekking option available here.
Kanheri Caves
Kaheri caves are a group of caves situated on the hillside on the outskirts of Mumbai. It is situated in Sajay Gadhi Natioal Park. There are 109 caves, which used to function as Buddhist Monastery. This is one of the best getaway from the city chaos and commotion into the green airy hill side which even has historical monuments, it also provides tranquility and a spectacular view of the city skyline.

This zoo is spread over 21 acres and situated in Byculla East, Mumbai, hence also called Byculla Zoo. Earlier it was known as Victoria Garden, it’s one of the oldest zoos in India. They have many animals here like Tigers, elephants, parrots, deers etc. It also houses cold weather animals and birds like penguins. A good place to go with children.
Local Train
A means to commute, used by the locals as its cheap and less time consuming, which gets packed during the peak hours. It’s the city’s lifeline and gives a unique identity to it. More than a million people travel by this mode of transportation in this city. One has to learn the specific skills of boarding and de-boarding the train as it stops for nearly 15 seconds on each platform whilst managing one's pockets and luggages since pick pocketing is a common phenomena here.
Dhobi Ghat
The Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat is an open air laundry. The washers called as dhobis wash clothes and linens mostly by hand and then these clothes will be pressed using the hot charcoal irons. There are around 700 washer families living in this area together. Each family member has a role to play, one flogs the clothes, the other hangs them out in the open to dry, and some iron the clothes. A visit to this place gives a glimpse into the life of the hardworking people of this City.
Dharavi Slums
The Dharavi Slum spans over 2 sq km and has a population of about a million people. It’s one of the most multicultural areas in Mumbai as it’s home to people from different parts of the country. This slum was started by the British in the 19th century to house the migrant workers working in the newly industrialized city. This part of the city gives an ample insight in to the lives of the working class and the need for their upliftment.
