Counselling can be a medical practice which is based purely on building a trust factor between counsellor and client. Helping the clients to talk about their past experiences and behavior, counselling allows them to feel free to say or express their feelings. This actually helps both i.e. client and counsellor as the client can learn new things leaving their disabilities behind and counsellor can support them by providing a lending hand. Moreover, it requires a lot of patience to actually help the client in true manner.

In addition to all these, counselling can help the clients in various concerns such as in depression, bereavement, self-esteem, anxiety, loneliness, learning problems, eating problems and many more.

How to find a counsellor for my child?

Your General Practitioner (GP) or child’s school can help you in finding a local child counsellor who can assist your child and make him comfortable. Also, child counselling can be found in many schools or you can head to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). However, note that all CAMHS do not provide counselling services.

What if my child shares personal details about the family?

Counselling is all about sharing the past experience as it is also the basic foundation to find the root problem thus, chances are there that your child may share some personal family details which he is not supposed to share. However, this step may be required to deal with your child’s problem. So, in such situations, you really can’t do a lot and therefore, it is foremost to look for a trustworthy counsellor who will keep your family details confidential.

Moreover, keep this thing in mind that counsellor is not there to judge you so, allow your child to express about his past experience or what he feels exactly.

Should I ask my child about the counselling session?

The counselling can be a conversation about personal or private things and each child has his own way to express the feelings. Therefore, it depends on the children whether they want to share the experience of counselling session or not. Some children may wish to share the experience by themselves whereas some may wish to keep it personal. So, you should never force your child to disclose the matter as chances are there that he may feel bad while discussing it with you. Instead, console your child as he may have been gone through the painful feeling of the past.

How long the counselling session will go?

Depending on the actual problem, the counselling period may vary. Moreover, every counsellor may have different ways to treat every problem. Thus, it is better to ask the counsellor about the period of counselling session.

Also, consider the expertise and reputation of the counsellor as it is for you child.
