time together

We all want our kids to have beautiful, positive childhood memories, but sometimes that can seem really difficult to create for your kids when there is just so much going on. So to help you, here are 5 ideas to create lasting memories in your home that you all will enjoy doing together.

  1. International Time Together

Spending quality family time together sounds easy, but with work schedules, activities, homework and more, it can feel almost impossible some days/weeks/months. But if you want to create positive memories in your home, then you have to be present (that also means not distracted!). Whether it is 10 minutes playing on the floor with your toddler or doing your teenagers nails in the kitchen, the feeling you give them by giving your time will be sure to make a lasting impression.

  1. Family Traditions

Traditions created with your family tend to create unforgettable memories because they are special events, activities or sayings that are not included in our everyday life. For example, when my husband was little his mother would hold and squeeze his hand when she was giving a "love transfer." He remembers those special moments and repeats them for his own kids. Traditions can be holiday themed by decorating the christmas tree together in matching pajamas or as simple as knowing Friday night is pizza night together.

  1. Experience Gifts

I love giving experience gifts because 1. There are less toys and junk for me to pick up. 2. The moment tends to last longer than the 30 seconds of opening a boxed gift. Experience gifts allow you and your kids to extend the moment of a celebration and enjoy more time together, usually doing something new and fun! In 10 years your child may not remember any of the Christmas gifts he received but he will remember that time Mom went to the arcade and won the biggest prize for him.

  1. Share Meals

"There is something profoundly satisfying about sharing a meal. Eating together, breaking bread together, is one of the oldest and most fundamentally unifying of human experiences." - Barbara Coloroso

The power of sharing food together is not to be underestimated. Studies show that families that regularly eat together have less risk with mental health issues and weight control. Not only that, but they have a stronger bond and healthy family life. A creative way to make memories is to associate it with food, whether that be spending time in the kitchen together making grandma's famous ravioli or enjoying ice cream sundaes and hearing about your kids' week at school.

  1. Extend the Invitation

Creating unforgettable memories in your home does not need to be limited to your family of (insert # of family members here). Some of my most clear memories when I was little included my best friend and neighbor. She was like part of the family so of course she was included. Think about the backyard parties with neighbors or having dinner with the "Smith’s." The more the merrier when it comes to creating positive healthy family memories.

These five ways to create unforgettable memories in your home are just reminders that with a little thought and a lot of love, you can have a big impact on your family’s life.
